Nauort lies on a wooded high plateau between the Saynbach and Brexbach valleys, on the first green hills of the Westerwald. There are numerous hiking and cycling trails around the village, and the forest trails are signposted for both activities. This gives you various ways to explore the surrounding area on foot or by bike. The elevation and forest trails shape two aspects of the landscape experience: open views and paths through the woods.

Trails, GeoRoute and Views

One specifically named option is the Wäller Tour “From Teufelsberg to Caaner Schweiz,” which is classified as a moderately difficult hike. The Wäller Tour is marked as a GeoRoute in the Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus National Geopark. The GeoRoute leads into the Brexbach valley, where rock formations reveal aspects of Westerwald geology. The GeoRoute starts and ends at the car park by the sports ground in Nauort. Free parking is available at the starting point, Sportplatz, 56237 Nauort. If you arrive by car, you can plan to start and finish at the same place.

The views also differ: Nauort’s location offers views across the Rhine Valley, the Eifel and Lake Laach. By contrast, the panoramic viewpoint on the northern edge of the village offers a sweeping view across the Westerwald along the GeoRoute. These two perspectives give you different points of reference when choosing between the village landscape and the route.

Church, Local History and Craftsmanship

The centrally located Church of St John the Baptist is accessible to visitors with disabilities. Parking for church visitors is available on Südstraße and Gartenstraße. Nauort also lies within the triangle formed by the old castle ruins of Sayn, Isenburg and Grenzau. Local history also includes jug making, a craft associated with the Kannenbäckerland. The church, castle ruins and tradition of jug making provide different historical points of interest, from a central landmark and the surrounding castle landscape to the history of local craftsmanship.

Sports and the Seasonal Indoor Swimming Pool

The sports complex includes an artificial turf pitch surrounded by a running and skating track. There are also facilities for basketball, long jump, beach volleyball and streetball. Another seasonal option is the indoor swimming pool, which is open during the winter season. Check the latest access information before visiting. This allows you to consider this seasonal indoor option separately from outdoor trails when planning your trip.

The Westerwald as a Wider Destination

The wider Westerwald destination also offers other distinct attractions. The WesterwaldSteig is a 235-kilometre long-distance hiking trail through the Westerwald with 16 stages; check the latest route planner before setting out. Stöffel Park is a former basalt quarry site of around 140 hectares, combining industrial heritage, geological history and nature. The TERTIÄRUM at Stöffel Park displays fossils, including the famous “Stöffel mouse”; the exhibition documents around 25 million years of geological history. These regional destinations complement Nauort’s local trails with their own themes of long-distance hiking, geology and industrial heritage.
