A circular hike of around 4 km starts at Gangolfushalle and follows the Eisenbach, passing through the Ludwig Hirsch clay-pit area, across fields and back towards Meudt via Dahlen. Along the way, there are repeated views of the landscape and the town. This circular route is therefore distinct from hiking routes that include Meudt or one of its districts as part of a longer itinerary.

Hiking and Cycling

The Westerwaldverein’s long-distance Hiking Trail III runs from Neuwied to Wetzlar and passes through Meudt. The Thuringian Hiking Trail passes through Ehringhausen, a district of Meudt. This means that a loop starting and ending in town sits alongside trails with different itineraries.

The 12 km Wäller ALLEen-Weg follows a disused railway line, is fully paved and has numerous rest areas. From Meudt, you can reach the route via the Eisenbach meadows after about 3.5 km. This distinction is important for planning: the approximately 3.5 km refers to the connection from Meudt; the Wäller ALLEen-Weg itself is 12 km long.

The 25 km Backesdörfer Tour can be started at Gangolfusbrunnen. It passes through the Meudt districts of Eisen and Ehringshausen and continues towards Hahner Waldsee. The tour links villages where communal bread baking has been revived. The Nassau-Wäller cycling loop can also be started in Meudt via a short connecting route such as the Wäller ALLEen-Weg. Before setting off, check the route markings and current trail conditions.

Local History and Buildings

Meudt was first mentioned in 1097 under the names muda or muede and is considered one of the oldest settlements in the Westerwald. The roots of today’s parish church date back to the 12th century. St. Petri Thronerhebung is a cross-shaped basilica dating from 1910/11, with a Romanesque tower. The former town hall is an imposing half-timbered building dating from 1596.

The Jewish cemetery complex at Laufgarten is designated as a historic monument zone and was established in the second half of the 18th century. There are 61 gravestones in the cemetery; the oldest dates from 1768. Memorial events have been held there regularly since 1969, usually every three years on the National Day of Mourning.

The Gangolfusbrunnen ensemble includes a statue of Saint Gangolf, a well covered by a grille and a flower bed. The spring was filled in during sewer works; the water jet today is powered by an electric pump. As conditions may change, it is advisable to check the current situation before visiting. The fountain is associated with an annual procession on Pentecost Sunday and a hand-washing ritual on the previous day.

The chapel in Eisen, a district of Meudt, contains stained-glass windows, a crucifix, a statue of the Madonna and a memorial plaque. It commemorates soldiers who were killed or went missing in the two world wars.
