Langenhahn combines trails through deciduous and coniferous forests with fields and a local history reflected in its chapels, churches, fountains and Old School. This offers two main ways to plan a break: spending time outdoors on hiking and cycling trails, or exploring the village’s historic buildings and traditions.

Forests and trails around Langenhahn

Walks in the municipality lead through deciduous and coniferous forests and across fields. In some places, the view stretches far across the wooded Westerwald landscape towards its highest elevations. Forest paths and field trails alternate with occasional far-reaching views. Benches offer a place to rest or have a picnic, and there are also hiking and cycling trails.

One specific route suggestion is the W5 Hergenrother-Kopf Loop, which can be started in Langenhahn. It is rated as moderate and includes paved, gravel and natural-surface sections. The difficulty rating and surface are two separate planning considerations: the rating describes the route, while the surfaces change along the way. The WällerLand-Manöver is also signposted in the direction of Langenhahn.

The W5 lists several places to stop for refreshments in Langenhahn. As dining options may change, check before your trip to see which ones are currently available.

Buildings and local history

The St. Sebastianus Chapel dates back to the 14th century and served as Langenhahn’s local church until 1924. The Church of the Sacred Heart belongs to a later building period: it was built from local basalt between 1922 and 1924 in the Neo-Baroque style. The two buildings thus represent different periods in the village’s history.

The Old School also connects its historic use with the present: the local church choir uses it as a rehearsal space. The annual autumn market is held in the former schoolyard and marketplace of the Old School; dates may vary. If you would like to plan a visit to the market, check the date before your trip.

The Anna Pump at St. Anna’s Fountain has been preserved as a monument to the historic water supply. It is decorated for St. Anne’s Day on 26 July. In this way, a testament to the former water supply is linked with a recurring local tradition.

The Westerwald as a wider setting

In the wider Westerwald destination, Stöffel Park offers a distinct perspective on geological history, industrial heritage and nature. The site of a former basalt quarry covers around 140 hectares and brings these themes together. The TERTIÄRUM displays fossils, including the famous Stöffel mouse, which documents around 25 million years of Earth’s history.

The Westerwald also offers hiking routes beyond local trail planning: the WesterwaldSteig is a 235-kilometre long-distance hiking trail with 16 stages. By comparison, the Hergenrother-Kopf Loop is a route that can be started in Langenhahn. These are different scales of planning: a named loop starting in Langenhahn and a long-distance hiking trail divided into stages. Check the current route planner before planning a stage.
