Basalt, chapels and memories of past settlements give Heilberscheid a clearly defined cultural theme. At the same time, marked Nordic walking routes and a forest discovery trail are available around the village. When planning your trip, you can choose between local history, religious places of remembrance and time on the trails.

Basalt and landscape

The municipality lies in Nassau Nature Park on the heights above the Gelbach Valley. The Heckstein, a small former basalt quarry, is located in the village centre. Hettenstein open-air stage also reflects the connection with the rock: it was built from basalt in an old quarry, where a basalt wall has been exposed. You will encounter basalt both at Heckstein and as a building material at the stage.

Chapels and places of remembrance

The present-day Marienkapelle was built in 1889/1890 and consecrated on 18 August 1890. Services have been held there ever since. A carved wooden Madonna, returned to the parish in 2016, is once again kept in the chapel. Its construction, consecration date and continuing use are defining milestones in the chapel’s history.

The Mariengrotte was created in the disused Hettenstein quarry and was inaugurated together with its statue in 1954. Every year, a procession goes to the grotto for the parish’s patronal feast on the Assumption of Mary. If you would like to attend the procession, check the date before your trip. Another testament to the area’s religious history is the wayside cross from 1899. It was erected in gratitude for an agreement to hold Sunday services in Heilberscheid during the winter for three years.

A wayside cross has commemorated the former settlement of Oberisselbach and its residents since 1984. A forest service is held every year on the first Sunday in September at the abandoned settlement site; check the date if you are planning your trip around it. A wayside cross and an information board also commemorate the former settlement of Sespenroth.

In 2026, visitors can experience the vanished settlement of Sespenroth virtually using augmented reality on the GelbACHTrail near Heilberscheid. Two audio dramas tell different episodes: in one, a grandfather explains the village’s difficult situation to his grandson. The second is about a mother encouraging her child below deck on the emigrant ship Leander.

Hiking trails of varying lengths

Four marked Nordic walking routes around Heilberscheid range from 4.5 to 14.5 kilometres. They all start and finish at the barbecue hut. The stated distances give you a concrete basis for choosing a route of the length you want.

The forest discovery trail near the barbecue hut is an approximately two-kilometre circular route with eleven stations dedicated to wood. These include a wooden xylophone, a model charcoal kiln, a barefoot path and an insect hotel. Alongside the longer routes, there is also a short themed trail and individual stations to explore.

The Heilberscheid barbecue hut has an oven and an open fireplace for heating, as well as outdoor grills and a fire pit. If you are planning to book, confirm that the facilities are available beforehand. This helps you plan according to what the hut can actually offer.

The GelbACHTrail and refreshments

The GelbACHTrail is a regional route of just under 22 kilometres, running from Montabaur in the southern Westerwald to Obernhof on the Lahn. Along the way, you can enjoy nature and views in Nassau Nature Park, discover art and explore history. Eight other hiking trails connect to the GelbACHTrail, offering additional ways to experience nature, culture and history. Check current conditions before setting out.

Dorfschänke Heilberscheid offers a place to enjoy food and drinks and also hosts family celebrations. Check whether it is currently open before visiting. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Heilberscheid, the local themes can guide your plans: would you prefer to focus on local history and religious places of remembrance, or on hiking and nature experiences?
