Two different route experiences make Dreisbach an interesting place to visit: the Kölner Weg passes through the village, while a forest section near Dreisbach provides access to a former basalt quarry and a small, secluded lake. This offers two distinct focuses: culture along the route and nature in the forest.

Hiking trail and local history in Dreisbach

The Kölner Weg reaches Dreisbach after 6.5 kilometers from the previous section. On its way into the village, the trail passes a chapel and a wayside shrine that was restored in 1904; it then continues toward Büdingen. The chapel and shrine give the route a religious and historical character. For hikers who want to notice smaller cultural landmarks along the way, this is a distinctive feature of the village.

The natural setting offers a different focus: a hiking trail through the forest near Dreisbach provides access to a former basalt quarry and a small, secluded lake. Here, the forest, rock and water take center stage. The two local attractions therefore offer different experiences without requiring a longer route.

The wider Westerwald destination

The wider Westerwald destination also offers longer hiking trails. The WesterwaldSteig is 235 kilometers long and crosses the Westerwald in 16 stages. The Druidensteig covers 94 kilometers in seven day stages, passes through seven river valleys and features more than 30 geo-information points. These figures help put their different scales into perspective: the WesterwaldSteig is longer and has more stages, while the Druidensteig combines its route with geological information. Check the current route planner before planning specific stages.

The “Weltende” nature trail in the Kroppacher Schweiz offers a different kind of route. It follows narrow trails and natural paths, including sections partly secured with wire cables, and offers views over the Nister Valley. Conditions and access may vary by season; check before planning your visit.

Basalt, landscape and geological history

The Stöffel-Park in the Westerwald is a former basalt quarry site covering around 140 hectares, combining industrial heritage, geological history and nature. The TERTIÄRUM at Stöffel-Park displays fossils, including the famous “Stöffel mouse,” which document around 25 million years of geological history. Thus, in the wider Westerwald, alongside hiking, the focus is also on the connection between a former quarry site and fossils.

The Holzbach Gorge offers another type of landscape in the Westerwald: it is a breakthrough valley around one kilometer long, with basalt walls up to 30 meters high. At 657 meters, the Fuchskaute is the highest elevation in the Westerwald; the Westerwald Lake District is a natural area with seven ponds. These places differ in character, from a gorge and a prominent elevation to a landscape with several ponds.

Museums, crafts and Hachenburg

In Hachenburg in the Westerwald, restored half-timbered houses around the Alter Markt give the historic town center its character. The Löwenbrunnen is also part of the historic setting. The Westerwald Ceramics Museum explores the history of working with clay; the objects on display mostly originate from a Westerwald clay pit. At the well-equipped museum workshop, visitors can get creative themselves under expert guidance. Check the current workshop program and booking conditions before your trip.

For an insight into brewing culture, the Hachenburger Erlebnis-Brauerei offers beer experience tours and brewing courses. Individual appointments can be arranged by phone. Check current booking options directly with the brewery.
