Steffeln has a clear thematic focus: the Volcanic Garden makes volcanic phenomena the starting point for a visit to the village, while St. Michael’s Church connects local geological history with a striking location. For planning purposes, the scale is especially helpful: a walk around the garden takes about an hour; the Volcano Trail includes a stage from Steffeln to Gerolstein. This lets you distinguish between a compact exploration and a hiking stage as two different options.

Volcanic Garden: Crater, Stations, and Views

The Steffeln Volcanic Garden is part of a geotope described as unique in Central Europe. Eruption layers are exposed in the Steffelberg crater, and a viewpoint offers panoramic views across the Volcanic Eifel. On the approximately one-hour circuit, 24 stations explain volcanic phenomena. Exposed layers, themed explanations, and views across the region offer different points of interest within the same outing. The duration gives you a specific time frame for the circuit, while the Volcano Trail is a separate hiking stage.

The information boards are written in German, English, and Dutch; the multilingual information concept was presented on November 5, 2024. The walk thus combines a manageable time commitment with different ways of exploring volcanism: the eruption layers in the crater, the explanations at the stations, and the expansive views across the landscape.

Volcanic Features in Steffeln and the Volcanic Eifel

The geological perspective extends beyond Steffelberg: the municipality of Steffeln, including Auel, has six dry maars of various sizes and a series of volcanic cones. The Steffeln Drees is another local feature; it is classified as an iron-rich calcium-magnesium-hydrogen carbonate acidulous spring. Alongside the landscape features, the characteristics of a spring also merit attention.

On the broader scale of the Volcanic Eifel, 77 maars have been identified to date. In addition, 350 eruption centers have been counted there, around 270 of them from the more recent phase. Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Volcanic Eifel, which took place about 10,900 years ago. These figures apply to the Volcanic Eifel as a whole and place Steffeln within the wider geological context.

Churches and Geological History

St. Michael’s Church stands on the eastern edge of Steffeln, on the southern slope of a prominent tuff cliff. It is built of palagonite tuff, quarried just below the site at a quarry that has been used since Roman times. Here, the church’s location and the history of local stone extraction come together.

The Wahlhausen votive chapel is about one kilometer northeast of Steffeln, on a hill at an elevation of 560 meters. The two sites offer different points of reference for understanding the area: St. Michael’s stands on the eastern edge of the village, while the chapel is on a hill northeast of it.

Hiking Plans and Getting There

For groups, the Eifel Association offers guided hikes in the Volcanic Garden by prior arrangement; confirm the specific arrangements with the association in advance. The Volcano Trail offers a different scale: one stage leads from Steffeln to Gerolstein. Jünkerath railway station is named as a possible starting point for accessing the trail by train. Check transport connections and route details before your trip.

If you are looking for accommodation in Steffeln, you can first plan your trip around its main focus: the approximately one-hour circuit in the Volcanic Garden or the hiking stage from Steffeln to Gerolstein. These two details describe different types of activity and can help you take your planned itinerary into account when choosing your destination.
