Windbreak hedges, a 132-hectare municipal forest, and the Hottenpaht interpretation give Scheid several clear points of reference: open agricultural landscapes, peaceful recreation, and local history. One farm offers farm holidays. When choosing where to stay, you can explore the village through its rural surroundings, traditional stories, and a specific accommodation option.

Open Landscapes and Peaceful Recreation

The agricultural landscape is open and crossed by windbreak hedges. A 132-hectare municipal forest lies nearby, and the surrounding area offers opportunities for peaceful outdoor recreation. Open fields and a larger forest area thus form two distinct aspects of the local landscape. This connection with nature offers a way to explore Scheid alongside the village’s historical traditions.

Hottenpaht and the Wayside Cross Tradition

As an alternative historical interpretation, the Hottenpaht links Scheid to a Roman trade-route junction: a route from Trier is said to have split here toward Cologne and Aachen. According to tradition, the route is called the Hottenpaht. This far-reaching trade-route story stands alongside the rural landscape.

Another tradition links seven wayside crosses with seven prayers said while kneeling. The crosses were renewed in 1969. Together, the two traditions connect local history with transport routes and religious customs.

Farm Holidays in Scheid

A farm in Scheid offers farm holidays. As an accommodation option, it combines Scheid’s rural character with a stay on a farm.

The Vulkaneifel as a Regional Setting

In the wider Vulkaneifel travel region, the focus shifts from the local agricultural landscape to volcanism. So far, 77 maars have been identified in the Vulkaneifel; 350 eruption centres have also been counted, around 270 of them from a more recent phase. The Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Vulkaneifel, which took place around 10,900 years ago. These figures provide different geological points of reference: maars, eruption centres, and an event placed in a specific timeframe.

The museums also offer different focuses. The Eifel Volcano Museum in Daun features three-dimensional landscape models of cinder cones, maars, and mineral springs, as well as exhibits on West Eifel volcanism. The Strohn Volcano House is an interactive museum featuring a lava fissure wall around 30,000 years old, approximately six metres long and four metres high. The Vulkaneifel thus offers landscape models and themed exhibits in Daun alongside an interactive museum experience with a striking geological exhibit in Strohn.

Hiking by Timeframe and Distance

The Vulkaneifel Trails offer half-day hikes, day hikes, and multi-day hikes; they are marked and signposted. For comparing specific distances, there are two further points of reference: the Vulcano Trail east of Schalkenmehren is a 26.2-kilometre circular route. The eleventh stage of the Eifelsteig runs from Daun to Manderscheid and is 23.4 kilometres long. This lets you choose by either the time format you prefer or a stated route length. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a specific hike.
