When choosing a stay in Kerschenbach, the main attractions are the streams, hiking trails and local history. The water adventure area combines opportunities to explore the water with child-friendly activities; routes KB1 and KB2 each focus on different themes. St. Lucia Chapel adds a historic building to these local discoveries, with a Late Gothic choir and a nave dating from 1681.

Experience the Water and Discover the Streams

The water adventure area is located where the Kalkerbach and DĂĽrenbach streams meet. It offers barrier-free access to the water and child-friendly ways to explore it. A shelter is located next to the hiking trails. This makes the area a place to enjoy the stream as well as a sheltered spot beside the trails, without making exploring the water and hiking the same experience.

The trails also take up the theme of water, but in different ways. KB1 reaches the confluence of the Kalkerbach and DĂĽrrbach, which form the Kerschenbach. KB2 follows the Kalkerbach and crosses the DĂĽrbach. Choose your route according to which streams you would like to explore.

Hiking Routes with Different Highlights

The Kerschenbach Circular Hiking Trail KB1 is considered family-friendly. According to its description, it is marked throughout in line with the criteria of the German Hiking Association. An information point covers the history of the Kerschenbach mill. Along with the trail to the confluence, KB1 thus brings together local history and waterways as specific hiking themes.

Walderlebnis Kerschenbach KB 2 is designated as a moderately difficult route, 8.1 kilometers long. It includes 120 meters of elevation gain and 120 meters of descent. A section of the route, about 400 meters long, runs along or on the K64 district road; take care of traffic there. Check road conditions and trail signs locally. The XXL bench installed on KB2 in 2023 offers wide-ranging views over the landscape around Kerschenbach and the neighboring holiday village.

KB3 offers a different focus: the route provides views of Lake Kronenburg and historic Kronenburg, with its rows of medieval houses. KB3 therefore centers on viewpoints, while KB1 includes an information point on mill history and KB2 is described in more detail by its length, elevation gain and route along two streams.

St. Lucia Chapel and Local History

St. Lucia Chapel is part of the local cultural heritage. The plastered rubble-stone building combines different periods of construction: the Late Gothic choir dates from the 16th century, and the two-bay nave from 1681. Inside, the furnishings include Baroque altar figures and a PietĂ ; the star-shaped vault depicts the four Evangelists. The architecture and furnishings give the chapel its own historical focus, alongside the trail themes of streams and the mill.

Getting There and Practical Information

Free parking is available at the municipal hall at Stadtkyller StraĂźe 2. Bus route 541 runs from JĂĽnkerath railway station to the municipal hall in Kerschenbach. Bus services may change, so check the connection before travelling. The different details provided for KB1 and KB2 can help you choose a route: KB1 is characterized by its family-friendly nature, trail marking and local themes; KB2 is specified by its length, elevation gain and a section along or on the K64.

The Vulkaneifel as a Wider Landscape Setting

Those considering Kerschenbach as part of the wider Vulkaneifel travel destination will also find a distinct geological context there. To date, 77 maars have been identified in the Vulkaneifel; 350 eruption centers have also been counted, about 270 of them from the more recent phase. The Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Vulkaneifel, which took place around 10,900 years ago. This regional perspective complements Kerschenbach’s water-themed trails and local history with the volcanic origins of the Vulkaneifel.
