The Vulkan-Pfad gives Esch a specific connection to hiking: the first stage starts on Dahlemer StraĂźe and leads to Steffeln. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, this starting point for the stage can factor into your choice of where to stay.

Vulkan-Pfad: Landscape and Route Planning

The Vulkan-Pfad features a range of volcanic landforms: lava outcrops, cinder cones, mineral springs, maars and caves. For a point-to-point hike on the trail, you can start in Esch or at JĂĽnkerath station. After the hike, you can take the train from Gerolstein back to JĂĽnkerath. Consider your start and return journey together to make sure the train connection suits your plans. Train connections and schedules may change; check the current connection before setting out on your hike.

The Vulkaneifel as a Broader Geological Context

Across the wider Vulkaneifel destination, 77 maars have been identified to date. In addition, 350 eruption centers have been counted there, around 270 of them from the more recent phase. The Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Vulkaneifel, which took place around 10,900 years ago. The Windsborn crater lake is near Bettenfeld and is the only natural crater lake north of the Alps. The Gemündener Maar has a water surface of around seven hectares and is the smallest of the three famous “Eyes of the Eifel.”

Hiking Options in the Vulkaneifel

Across the wider Vulkaneifel destination, the Vulkaneifel-Pfade trails are marked and signposted. They include half-day hikes, day hikes and multi-day hikes, and lead to scenic highlights on both sides of the Eifelsteig. Individual routes vary in format and length: the Vulcano-Pfad is a 26.2-kilometer circular trail east of Schalkenmehren. The eleventh stage of the Eifelsteig runs from Daun to Manderscheid and is 23.4 kilometers long. This makes it possible to distinguish between a circular route and a stage between two places as different hiking formats. The time categories for the Vulkaneifel-Pfade address a different planning question from the kilometer distances of individual routes: the time available on the one hand, and route format and length on the other. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Geology in Exhibitions and at Historic Sites

The Eifel Volcano Museum in Daun features three-dimensional landscape models of cinder cones, maars and mineral springs, as well as exhibits on West Eifel volcanism. The interactive Strohn Volcano House features a lava fissure wall around 30,000 years old, approximately six meters long and four meters high. The Gerolstein Natural History Museum is considered the largest and oldest geological museum in the Eifel; its three floors display stone evidence from the region’s geological history. At the Strohn Lava Bomb, visitors can explore how it formed on site and experience the effects of volcanism in the Eifel. Local access conditions may vary. Ulmen Castle Ruins also connect the landscape with architectural history: they rise above the steep bank of the Ulmen Maar, and parts of the upper castle remain.
