The Catholic parish church of St. Chrysantius and Daria brings Welcherath’s cultural history to life: it is a protected rural Baroque church. A Pietà, wall and ceiling paintings from around 1920, and a 1694 basalt lava Crucifixion group are among its features. The church was restored between 2010 and 2011. Here, you can encounter works of art from different periods in one place.

Sacred history in the church and townscape

The wayside crosses also provide specific historical reference points. A basalt shaft cross at Hauptstraße 8 is dated 1732, while a basalt beam cross at the eastern edge of the village is dated 1658. Both are listed in the register of cultural monuments of the Vulkaneifel. The dates help distinguish the two monuments: the cross at the edge of the village is older than the one on Hauptstraße.

Welcherath’s coat of arms is based on an old court seal from 1691 and depicts Chrysanthus and Daria, the patron saints of the village. The two saints also give the parish church its name. Another religious tradition recalls the centuries-old pilgrimage to Valwigerberg: the parish communities associated with Welcherath erected a pilgrim stone for the occasion. Its inauguration included a church service and a procession.

Motorsport and route connections

The Nürburgring is close to Welcherath, and motorsport is part of everyday life in the village because of this proximity. The Raustert quarry near Welcherath offers another specific connection to the volcanic landscape. The 2026 Geopark visitor brochure lists it as stop 16 on the German Volcano Route. The 280-kilometre route connects 39 accessible geological, cultural-historical and industrial-historical sights associated with volcanism in the Eifel.

A road cycling route also passes through Welcherath: the Radarena am Ring runs from Langenfeld through the village between Drees and Brücktal. The route information gives 11 December 2024 as its update date; check current route conditions before setting out. Another type of route is the Hocheifelweg (HWW 14). It begins near Nürburg and the Nürburgring and heads west towards the Upper Kyll Valley and Kronenburg. This clearly distinguishes the road cycling route through Welcherath from a hiking trail with its own start and destination points.

The Vulkaneifel as a regional setting

The Vulkaneifel as a whole provides a broader context for geological themes. To date, 77 maars have been identified there, and 350 eruption centres have been counted, around 270 of them from the more recent period. The Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Vulkaneifel, which took place around 10,900 years ago. These regional figures describe the Vulkaneifel, not individual places such as Welcherath.

For hikes in the Vulkaneifel, the Vulkaneifel Trails offer half-day trips, day hikes and multi-day hikes. They lead to scenic highlights on both sides of the Eifelsteig and are marked and signposted. The different durations make it easier to choose a hike based on how much time you plan to spend that day, without assuming a specific hike length for Welcherath.

Museums also broaden the regional perspective on volcanism. The Eifel Volcano Museum in Daun features three-dimensional landscape models of cinder cones, maars and mineral springs, as well as exhibits on West Eifel volcanism. The Vulkanhaus Strohn is an interactive museum; its geological exhibits include a lava fissure wall around 30,000 years old, approximately six metres long and four metres high.

Welcherath as a starting point for your search

When looking for accommodation, it helps to distinguish local themes from regional destinations: the church, wayside crosses, pilgrim stone and road cycling route through the village are directly associated with Welcherath. The geological figures, the Vulkaneifel Trails and the museums mentioned belong to the broader regional setting. This can help you plan your trip around whether local history, motorsport or the volcanic landscape of the Vulkaneifel is your main focus.
