You can get to know Hörschhausen through its village layout and history: its characteristic clustered structure is still recognizable, and the village was first mentioned in writing in the 15th century. Two former watermills are now used as residential buildings. Together, these details offer a local perspective through settlement patterns, written records, and former mill use.

Village Layout and Local History

The term “clustered village” draws attention to how the entire settlement is grouped together. This characteristic structure is still recognizable in Hörschhausen. The first written mention in the 15th century provides a historical time marker; the two former watermills add further evidence of past use. Their present status is clear: they are used as residential buildings. Anyone interested in a village’s history can consider its settlement pattern alongside its individual historic uses.

Geology and Maars of the Vulkaneifel

The Vulkaneifel offers a distinctive regional perspective on volcanism. The UNESCO Global Geopark Vulkaneifel highlights the region’s geological significance internationally. To date, 350 volcanic eruption centers have been counted there, about 270 of them from a more recent phase. The Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Vulkaneifel, which took place about 10,900 years ago. These figures combine a regional overview with one approximately dated event.

The maars also differ in how visitors can experience them. Swimming, bathing, and boating are possible at selected maars; others are best explored on hikes, walks along the shore, or from viewpoints. The right activity depends on the particular maar and the time of year. Windsborn Crater Lake near Bettenfeld is considered the only natural crater lake north of the Alps. Gemündener Maar has a water surface of about seven hectares and is the smallest of the three famous “eyes of the Eifel.”

Choose Hikes by Duration and Route Type

The Vulkaneifel trails pass through maar landscapes, forests, and stream valleys, leading to expansive views. Many are certified quality trails and start at accessible locations. The options range from relaxed circular hikes to varied point-to-point walks; there are also half-day, full-day, and multi-day hikes. This lets you consider two different questions: How much time should a hike take, and what type of route suits your plans?

The official Vulkaneifel route finder can be filtered by length, difficulty, route type, and theme. This helps narrow down a hike based on the features you want. The route descriptions also show that the region offers options ranging from short outings to multi-day hikes.

Museums and Architectural History

The Eifel Volcano Museum in Daun presents volcanic phenomena from the Vulkaneifel and around the world using images, information panels, models, original rocks, and minerals. It also features three-dimensional landscape models of cinder cones, maars, and mineral springs, as well as exhibits on West Eifel volcanism. The interactive Strohn Volcano House has a particular focus: its exhibition includes a lava fissure wall about 30,000 years old, around six meters long and four meters high.

The ruins of Ulmen Castle offer another regional perspective. They rise above the steep shore of Ulmen Maar, and parts of the upper castle have been preserved. In this region, geological exhibitions and landforms sit alongside built heritage.

Farm Products in the Vulkaneifel

The BioHofLaden Ulmenhof in Sarmersbach offers farm products, as well as a fireplace nook and a sun terrace. At Ulmenhof, cow’s and goat’s milk are made into cheese every day, without preservatives or other additives. If you plan to visit the farm shop, check the current selection in advance.

When planning your trip, you can choose between two different focuses: Hörschhausen’s recognizable village structure and local history, or the geological, hiking, and cultural themes of the Vulkaneifel. Consider which of these you would like to shape your trip as you look for suitable hotels for your stay.
