Hohenfels-Essingen lies in the Vulkaneifel and combines a network of hiking trails spanning more than 25 kilometres with historic millstone caves and basalt quarries. The MĂĽhlenberg also offers the Mariengrotte and a viewpoint. This raises a practical question when planning your trip: would you like your stay to focus mainly on a hike with specified distances, geology or cultural sites?

Hiking and mountain biking

The Zähbasaltweg provides a clear framework for planning your hike: the circular trail is 7.1 kilometres long, takes 2 hours 25 minutes and includes 206 metres of ascent and 206 metres of descent. The route offers wide views across the Vulkaneifel and passes the millstone caves, including Schwedenfeste, Borussiahöhle and St.-Martin-Höhle. Check trail conditions before setting out. The caves can be explored at your own risk; find out about the conditions for each cave before entering.

If you would rather plan a hike around points of interest than a set distance, you can link the MĂĽhlenberg viewpoint, the Mariengrotte, a picnic area and caves above Hohenfels-Essingen. There is also a trailhead in the village for the Vulkanbike Trail Park. Here too, it is advisable to check trail conditions before setting off.

Guided pony rides into the “Realm of Darkness” are offered as a family activity. Check before your trip whether a provider is available.

Basalt, millstones and the Mariengrotte

The millstone caves are a historic attraction in Hohenfels-Essingen. Millstones were made in underground cavities cut into volcanic rock, carved out from above and produced in specified sizes. Millstone quarrying dates back to the mid-13th century. On the MĂĽhlenberg, the volcanic landscape thus meets traces of centuries of working the stone.

The Mariengrotte lies hidden in a tall beech forest in a landscape rich in caves. It is maintained and used for devotions in the forest. The basalt quarries of Hohenfels-Essingen are associated with the largest basalt columns in the Vulkaneifel. Towards Betteldorf, there is also an abandoned quarry area being reclaimed by nature, where typical basalt columns can be seen.

The wider Vulkaneifel destination offers a geological perspective beyond the village: 77 maars have been identified there to date, and 350 volcanic centres have been counted, around 270 of them from the more recent phase. These regional figures place the basalt and cave features of Hohenfels-Essingen in a broader volcanic context.
