In Densborn, you can choose between a walk along streams, routes featuring cultural and historical landmarks, and various cycling options. When looking for accommodation, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: Should a particular hike be the deciding factor, are you interested in the history of the crosses, or would you like to explore the surrounding area by bike? The options differ in route character and theme.
Hiking Along Streams and Through Forests
The Trail of the Lively Streams in Densborn is an 8.2-kilometre, moderately difficult circular hike with 168 metres of elevation gain and loss. The route passes through the Kyll Valley and quiet Eifel forests near Densborn. The Schlierbach, Ansbach and Treisbach accompany the trail; riverside sections, dense woodland and natural paths alternate along the way. Small viewpoints over the Kyll Valley and places to rest, including a panoramic lounger, round out the tour. The specific route and elevation details make it easy to assess the loop.
Beyond this individual loop, Densborn has around 80 kilometres of hiking trails through forests. The Trail of the Lively Streams is currently available as a GPX route and is not signposted. If you plan to hike it, prepare for navigation using the GPX file in advance and check that the tour fits your plans for the day.
Historic Crosses Along the Trail
The Trail of Historic Crosses offers a different focus: several surviving plague crosses stand along the route. They were erected as symbols of faith, hope and remembrance. Stone monuments along the trail date from the 17th to the 20th century. QR codes provide historical background and explain the inscriptions on the crosses. The trail thus connects the individual memorials with their significance, offering a thematic alternative to the nature-focused stream walk.
The Trail of Historic Crosses is also currently available only as a GPX route and is not signposted. Plan for navigation on both trails accordingly, rather than expecting signposts on either route. If you choose the crosses, you can use the QR explanations to make the inscriptions and commemorative nature of the trail the focus of your walk.
Cycling and Getting There
The children's cycle route includes almost flat sections of the Kyll and Maare-Mosel cycle paths between Densborn and Bewingen. Child-friendly characters along the route include Willi Basalt, Biggi Biene, Elli Eule and Freddi Fledermaus. The route also provides information about nature, culture and history. This gives it a different character from the hiking trails: cycling and the accompanying themes take centre stage.
The Kyll Valley Cycle Route also supports cycling activities. Those weighing up hiking and cycling will find several different options, without the individual trails being combined into a single circular route. For rail travel, Densborn station is a useful connection point: RB22 runs hourly there on the Eifel line between Cologne and Trier. Check the timetable for your travel date if you plan to use this connection.
The Wider Region: Vulkaneifel
As a broader travel destination, Vulkaneifel offers a distinct geological perspective. To date, 77 maars have been identified there and 350 eruption centres counted, around 270 of them from the more recent phase. Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in Vulkaneifel, which took place about 10,900 years ago. These regional facts complement Densborn’s trails, waterways and historic crosses with a different subject: the volcanic formation of Vulkaneifel.
