Wincheringen combines winegrowing along the Moselle Trail with a multifaceted local history. When planning your trip, you can take both into account: the wineries each have their own focus, while buildings and protected historic areas offer insights into several centuries. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests without reducing the town to a single theme.

Winegrowing, winemakers and tastings

The vineyards of Weingut Gries are located in Wincheringen and Nittel, directly along the Moselle Trail and amid large limestone cliffs. Weingut Matthias Hild is a fourth-generation family business specializing in Elbling. The grapes are hand-harvested, and the vines are tended without herbicides or insecticides. The wineries therefore differ not only in location but also in their stated approaches to cultivation.

At Weingut Michael Backendorf, a long tradition of winegrowing goes hand in hand with environmentally friendly cultivation. Various aspects of winegrowing are also explained there: from growing and tending the vineyards to harvesting and processing the grapes, and making wine in the cellar. This gives you a thematic introduction to the steps involved in producing wine.

Weingut Hermann Schneider produces wine, sparkling wine and spirits locally. Burg Warsberg is its main vineyard site; its hillside location and exposure to the sun create suitable conditions for various grape varieties. If you are interested in vineyard walks or wine-related events, you can contact the winery.

Each winery offers its own setting for wine tastings: Gries offers tastings for groups of 10 to 30 people; Hermann Schneider caters to individuals and groups of up to 70. Matthias Hild also offers wine tastings, while Backendorf offers tastings in its tasting room or wine cellar. As visitor arrangements can change, it is advisable to check directly about dates and organization. A convenient quick stop on the Palzem–Nittel stage of the Moselle Trail is Weingut Gries’s chilled wine vending machine, available around the clock; check the winery’s information before your visit.

Building history and traces in the townscape

St. Peter’s Parish Church is a three-aisled Neo-Gothic basilica, built in 1883/84 to plans by Reinhold Wirtz. An older historical point of interest is the protected area around the former moated castle and cemetery: it preserves a defensive tower from the 15th century, a manor house from the 16th century and parts of the northern wall ring. The cultural spaces in the Warsberg Castle complex are opened for events.

Other traces of the past are scattered throughout the townscape: Helenenkreuz, at the old Roman road, is a wayside cross dating from 1746 and was renovated in 1810. The protected area around Im Weissfeld, Trierer StraĂźe, WarsbergerstraĂźe and WeinbergstraĂźe preserves the distinctive streetscape of the old eastern edge of the village, as well as the 19th-century expansion with notable farmsteads. The focus here is therefore on architectural forms and streetscapes, not just individual buildings.

The former mill at Mühlenweg 3 is another historic building. The building, with its half-hipped roof, dates from 1789 and was renovated in 1877. Wincheringen’s archaeological history also includes the discovery of the so-called “Rich Treverian Woman’s Grave,” found here in 1936. Alongside the architectural landmarks, this find offers another way to explore the town’s past.

For a focus on cultural history, you can compare the different periods represented: from the 15th-century defensive tower to the wayside cross and mill, and on to the Neo-Gothic church and 19th-century farmsteads. It is best to arrange tasting dates and group sizes directly with the respective wineries.
