A Roman villa complex and the remains of a medieval moated castle give Welschbillig a strong cultural and historical focus. At the same time, several hiking trails lead to viewpoints, rest stops and notable buildings. When planning your stay, you can decide whether you would like to focus mainly on historical sites or on hiking.

Roman traces and a medieval castle

Welschbillig is associated with a Roman villa complex and an ornamental and rowing pond that was surrounded by 112 herms. Most of the herm heads recovered are on display at the State Museum in Trier. The complex was uncovered during construction of the parish church and is considered unique north of the Alps. The combination of the site, its discovery and the surviving heads makes the town’s Roman heritage particularly vivid.

The remains of the medieval moated castle include part of the north-western tower, a gatehouse with two round towers and a stone bridge over the moat. Sections of the former 1.5-kilometre-long town wall have also survived. The castle grounds are also home to a church and an administrative building. The former administrative building is considered an early example of Baroque princely country architecture and is now used as a rectory; if needed, confirm its current use locally.

St Peter’s is a yellow sandstone basilica in neo-Gothic style. It was built from 1888 to 1890 on the site of the former castle. The Baroque church on Helenenberg offers a different historical perspective, with the Spitolsweg passing by it: its nave is Baroque, while the choir is Late Gothic and is considered an outstanding example of Late Gothic architecture in the Trier region. The painting on the star vault bears the date 1518; the elaborately crafted sacrament house is dated 1525. On weekdays, you can ask for access at the gate. Check access arrangements locally before your visit.

Theatre is also part of local tradition: plays in the Welschbilliger Platt dialect are performed every year. Those interested in the local dialect will find a living cultural connection here alongside the stone monuments.

Hiking trails with different points of interest

The Spitolsweg is a circular route with specific planning details: it is 8 kilometres long, takes 2.5 hours and is rated easy to moderate. The start and finish are at the car park by the Kultur- und Marktscheune in Welschbillig. Route details may change; check them before setting out. Along the way, the Nussbach has a rest area with a shelter, table and bench, as well as a nearby barbecue area. At the Geider Kreuz, you will also find a shelter, seating and relaxation benches; from there, you can see the centre of Welschbillig.

The Welschbillig-Schilzenburg “Eine Spur echter” No. 12 hiking trail starts and ends at the Schilzenburg car park. Its highlight is the panoramic view from the summit of Schilzenburg. The route is one of the 20 uniformly signposted trails in the Trier-Land hiking network. Check local parking conditions before travelling there. The German-Luxembourg Way of St James also passes through Welschbillig; check the signage and current trail conditions before setting out.

The two hiking routes described offer different experiences: the Spitolsweg stands out for its stated distance, duration and rest stops, while the highlight of Route No. 12 is the panoramic view from Schilzenburg. You can make your choice based on whether a clearly measured circular route or a scenic destination matters more to you.

Landscape and things to do locally

The Falzerbach is considered a stream with a naturally unaltered course. Access to the water and the wooded surroundings, which have an almost primeval-forest feel, add a landscape experience to the historical sights. Conditions there can change with the seasons.

In Welschbillig-Hofweiler, the Schiltzhof operates a self-service farm shop that is open around the clock and sells products from regional producer cooperatives. Product availability may vary. The Schiltzhof also offers bookable alpaca walks and meet-and-greet experiences; check availability in advance.
