The sandstone ring wall of Ehrang is 1,040 metres long and four to five metres high. The Ehrang Historic Town Wall Circular Walk follows the historic wall through the town centre. The route is 1,700 metres long and takes about 40 minutes; numerous cultural monuments line the way. The walk thus combines a route through the town centre with insights into different chapters of the area’s history.
From the Town Centre to the Viewpoints
If you are planning to spend more time outdoors, you can include the hike via Quint Palace Park and the heath in your stay. It starts at the car park by the Kyll bridge, is eight kilometres long and takes about one hour and 40 minutes. Check local access conditions before travelling. Quint Palace Park is known for its exotic tree species. From two benches above the barrier along the hike, you can enjoy views of the Moselle Valley and the Meulenwald. Another viewpoint at the cross on the Heidestuben offers views across the Trier valley expanse and the Ruwer Valley.
The two routes take different amounts of time: about 40 minutes for the town wall walk and around one hour and 40 minutes for the hike. This helps with planning your day without combining the buildings and scenic trails into a single outing. When choosing a holiday apartment in Ehrang, you can consider whether you would like to focus your stay more on local history or on the longer hike.
The history of Quint Palace also adds to the picture of the area: the palace once served as the residence of the owners of the Quint ironworks. Archaeological finds suggest that a Romano-Christian settlement existed in the area of what is now the Ehrang-Quint district. These are two different historical perspectives on Ehrang and Quint.
Buildings and Traces from Different Centuries
The Catholic Parish Church of St Peter is a Gothic Revival hall church built between 1872 and 1875. Its stained-glass windows come from different periods. The Linken Chapel at the forest cemetery is a Marian chapel: it was built in 1905 on the foundations of an earlier building first mentioned in 1805. The Heath Chapel dates from 1375 and was restored in 1632.
Further historical details can be found in smaller buildings and inscriptions. The three-part Milo Cross was first mentioned in 1336. Haus Briel is considered the oldest house in Ehrang and bears the date Anno 1593. The Coopers’ Chapel dates from the 18th century; a high-water mark from 1784 is set into its door frame. The Old Ehrang Railway Station is a designated cultural monument dating from around 1881. The details thus range from an early mention and construction dates to a date on a building and a visible high-water mark.
Markets and Routes for Different Interests
Ehrang Market was first mentioned by name in 1350 and was originally a livestock market. This recurring four-day event includes music, church services, club activities and fairground festivities. Dates and programmes may change; check the announced dates if the market is a reason for your trip.
Cycling routes are another option in the area: the Moselle Cycle Path passes through Ehrang. There are also connections to the Kyll Valley Cycle Path and the Mäushecker Cycle Path, as well as to the Ruwer-Hochwald Cycle Path via the Moselle bridge. Ehrang can be reached via the B 53 and A 602; bus connections serve Trier and Schweich. When planning, you can therefore weigh up a stay focused on cultural monuments, cycling routes or the hike via Quint Palace Park and the heath, without having to assume a fixed daily schedule.
