Oberbillig lies opposite the confluence of the Sauer and Moselle rivers. An old fishing and shipping village on the Moselle, it combines local history with a geological and natural history trail along the ridge. This gives you a clear choice for your stay: focus on the buildings and museum, choose the forest nature trail, or include Oberbillig as a stage on the Moselle Cycle Route. The ferry to Wasserbillig adds a route across the river to these options.
Local history at the Pieterhaus
Built in 1862, the Pieterhaus houses the village museum. Its exhibits include a Stone Age collection with material dating back to the Neanderthals, the parish chronicle of St. Barbara, and the story of Oberbillig residents who emigrated to the United States. Prehistoric finds are thus presented alongside church records and the history of emigration. Another historical connection is the significant remains of Frankish settlement found in Oberbillig. The museum offers several ways to explore local history, from archaeological finds to the life stories of people who left the village for the United States. Opening arrangements may vary, so it is best to check before visiting.
Church and historic houses
St. Barbara’s is a parish church built in 1864 in an elevated location and forms part of the Kirchstraße historic monument zone. Haus der Fischerei is a house from the late 19th century, built in the style of a Trier single-house. Along with the Pieterhaus, the church and this house represent different architectural styles and uses in Oberbillig’s townscape: village museum, parish church and residence. The Pieterhaus and church were built only a few years apart; Haus der Fischerei adds a building from the late 19th century to the picture.
Forest nature trail with views of the Upper Moselle
The Oberbillig forest nature trail runs along the ridge above the village. As a geological and natural history trail, it offers a different experience from the buildings in the village: the route passes megalithic tombs, and the views extend across the Upper Moselle and its vineyards. The route brings together natural history, an archaeological landmark, and views of the river landscape and vineyards. If you plan to walk the trail, check current conditions in advance, as they may vary.
Moselle Cycle Route and ferry
The Moselle Cycle Route provides a guide for arriving by bicycle and continuing your journey. Its second stage reaches Oberbillig via Wellen and Temmels. In the village, the route follows Dorfstraße to the ferry; at the edge of Oberbillig, it continues along a narrow riverside cycle path towards Wasserliesch. It is worth checking the current route, as descriptions may change when infrastructure is updated.
The Sankta Maria II connects Oberbillig with nearby Wasserbillig in Luxembourg; the service is intended for residents, commuters and tourists. It is also the only car ferry crossing the river between Trier and Wellen. The ferry is considered the world’s first fully electric car ferry for inland waterways. If you plan to cross, check the operating details in advance. The two routes serve different purposes: the cycle path continues along the Moselle towards Wasserliesch, while the ferry connects Oberbillig with Wasserbillig.
