Nittel is associated with the Nitteler Fels area. There, dolomite cliffs and plateaus support dry, nutrient-poor grassland and woodland; the area also includes species-rich habitats, including orchid-rich semi-dry grasslands. Seven local hiking trails, winegrowing, a themed walk and historic churches offer different ways to shape your stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Nittel, you can start by considering whether landscape, wine or local history is your main focus.

Rocky Landscapes and Hiking Trails

The seven local hiking trails are well signposted, each identified by its own colour and local name. The colours and names make it easier to distinguish the trails when planning. Free hiking maps are available from accommodation providers and information centres.

The Nittel Wine Experience Trail is 1.6 kilometres long and is described as a walk of about 45 minutes. It leads through the Nitteler Leiterchen vineyard. Information boards explain Elbling cultivation and work in the vineyard; stops at wineries or seasonal wine taverns are part of the visitor experience. If you stop for refreshments along the way, allow extra time for it.

Winegrowing and Regional Cuisine

Twenty winegrowing families in Nittel cultivate grape varieties ranging from Elbling to Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir. You can buy wine directly from local winemakers. This lets you explore winegrowing both along the Wine Experience Trail and when buying wine.

Weingut Apel combines regional cuisine with the winery’s own wines. If you want to include wine in your stay not only as a theme for a walk but also alongside regional cuisine, this is a specific option. Buying directly from local winemakers offers another way to explore the wines of Nittel.

Churches and Local History

Nittel’s St Martin’s Church was first mentioned in an archiepiscopal document in 1030. The year 1758 refers to something different: it is carved into the entrance arch and commemorates the church’s reconstruction. The two dates therefore mark different historical points of reference—the first mention and a later reconstruction.

St Roch’s Chapel was first documented in 1432. Every year on 16 August, a procession takes place there, with participants bringing the first ripe grapes of the year. The chapel is open to visitors on Sundays and public holidays. Check access again before your trip if you want to plan a visit specifically.

Cycling and Getting There

You can cycle on the Moselle Cycle Route in Nittel. The route runs from Koblenz to Thionville and mainly follows asphalted or paved paths. This information refers to the route as a whole; it does not mean that every individual section is the same.

An hourly regional train service towards Perl or Wincheringen reaches Nittel in about 26 minutes with one change. Check the current timetable before travelling. You can therefore choose from different focuses for your plans: a wine walk with insights into cultivation, local hiking trails, churches with their own historical milestones, or a cycling tour on the Moselle Cycle Route.
