In Mehring, hikes through varied landscapes can be combined with Roman history and regional cuisine. The Extratour Zitronenkrämerkreuz is a circular route through the surrounding area, while the Roman villa offers a distinct cultural focus. Wine tastings at local wineries and culinary offerings at local restaurants round out the options for your stay.
Hiking from Mehring: a circular route or a Moselsteig stage?
The premium hiking route Extratour Zitronenkrämerkreuz starts at the Huxlay Plateau above Mehring and forms an approximately 20-kilometre loop around Mehring and neighbouring Moselle towns. River panoramas and vineyards are among the sights along the way, as are steep paths, forests, meadows and cultural highlights. The route thus brings together different landscape features in a single circular hike.
Another hiking option is the Moselsteig stage from Mehring to Leiwen. It is considered challenging and passes through the forests of the Mehringer Schweiz. Its features include steep paths, a 20-metre-high wooden observation tower and views of five lakes. The two options differ in form: the Extratour is an approximately 20-kilometre loop, while the Moselsteig stage connects Mehring and Leiwen.
Check trail conditions before setting out. The surface and access conditions on the Extratour may vary; conditions along the Moselsteig stage should also be checked before departure.
Roman villa, wine tastings and regional cuisine
The Roman villa in Mehring includes a large bathing complex. The site can be explored using augmented reality with the free ARGO app. Check whether the app is available before your trip. This allows a visit to the villa to be combined with a digital exploration of the Roman site.
For a taste of the local cuisine, wine tastings at Mehring’s wineries and offerings at local restaurants are part of the town’s appeal. If you have a particular wine tasting in mind, check the offering with the winery concerned separately. Mehring offers a range of different experiences: hiking, Roman history, wine and restaurant cuisine.

Roman history is also evident in Tawern, in the wider Trier-Saarburg destination: the Roman road settlement of Tabernae is considered the origin of the town and was established shortly before the turn of the era on the main Roman road from the Moselle via Metz to Rome. The large reconstructed temple complex of Tawern stands in the forest; an authentic model of Tabernae at a scale of 1:75 is displayed in a pavilion. The temple complex can be viewed on site at full scale and as a 360-degree augmented reality display using the free ARGO app.
