Kasel combines hiking trails with wine growing and historic architecture. The Ruwer Riesling Adventure Trail offers a well-defined loop with themed stops; seasonal hiking options are also available on the Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig. You can choose from different options when planning your trip: a circular route focusing on culture and nature, a stage hike or a cycling route that passes directly through the village.
Hiking: Loop or Stage Route
The Ruwer Riesling Adventure Trail is 8.2 kilometers long and follows a circular route. Its ten information stations cover wine growing, flora and fauna, history, geology and culture. The route combines exercise with topics that appeal to a range of interests: you can plan your walk around the stops as well as the distance. There are viewpoints and rest areas along the way. You can also take a shortcut through the loop in Kasel, and the mostly paved surfaces are suitable for families. If you’re planning to walk the route, check the trail conditions before setting out; details may change if the trail infrastructure is modified.
Kasel is a stage location on the Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig. The time of year is also a factor when choosing a hike there: vineyard walks are recommended in cooler seasons, while forest routes, including stages 26 and 27, are recommended in warmer seasons. Check trail conditions and signs locally before planning a specific route.
Wine Growing and Architectural History in Kasel
Wine growing also shapes Kasel; its vineyard sites include Kaseler Nies’chen and Hitzlay. Kasel’s connection with wine also includes historic secular buildings: the former estates of the St. Paulin and St. Irminen monasteries, as well as Nell’s former wine press house. These buildings add an architectural perspective on wine growing to the vineyard sites.
The Ruwer-Hochwald Cycle Route also passes directly through Kasel, offering a cycling focus distinct from the hiking options.
Trails and History in the Wider Trier-Saarburg Destination
The wider Trier-Saarburg destination has 492 kilometers of cycling routes in the district. The Tälchen Tour is a circular route rated as moderate, covering 37.28 kilometers and taking about 2 hours and 45 minutes; it starts and ends in Konz. At 37.28 kilometers, it is considerably longer than the 8.2-kilometer Ruwer Riesling Adventure Trail.
Large sections of Saarburg Castle’s surrounding walls and a residential tower have been preserved; several viewing platforms and the tower offer panoramic views of the Saar Valley. In Tawern, the Roman roadside settlement of Tabernae is considered to be the origin of the village. It was established shortly before the turn of the era on the main Roman road from the Moselle via Metz to Rome. A pavilion displays a model of the settlement at a scale of 1:75; the reconstructed temple complex is also located in the forest. The free ARGO app lets visitors view the complex on site at its original size and as a 360-degree augmented reality display. The Roman theater at Kastel-Staadt has a 2.5-kilometer Archaeological Adventure Trail. These Roman sites offer a different historical focus from Kasel’s wine-growing history.
