Irsch is associated with premium hiking in the Saar-Obermosel region. The routes lead through steep vineyards, river valleys, gorges and stream valleys, as well as nature reserves with viewpoints. Before setting out, you should check local route conditions. When planning your day, you can focus on the landscapes that interest you most.

Premium Hiking, Cycling and Regional Cuisine

Cycling offers a different focus in the Saar-Obermosel region. The region is known for mostly flat routes along the Moselle, Saar and Sauer rivers. They are suitable for leisurely rides, family outings and multi-day tours. So while hiking, the focus is on steep vineyards and varied valleys, the cycle routes tend to be flat. Check local conditions before setting out on a specific ride.

At a regional level, a varied cuisine featuring rediscovered traditional dishes is also part of the Saar-Obermosel region. If you are planning to try a specific dish, it is worth checking the current menu: individual restaurants and menus may change.

Cycle Routes and Culture in the Trier-Saarburg Travel Destination

There are 492 kilometres of cycle routes in the Trier-Saarburg district. One specific route is the Tälchen Tour: this moderately difficult circular route is 37.28 kilometres long and is listed as taking about 2 hours and 45 minutes. It starts and ends in Konz and leads to the Wiltinger Saarbogen nature reserve. The route also recommends a detour to the waterfall in Saarburg’s old town. The distance and approximate duration give an indication of the scope of this tour; by contrast, the district’s total distance describes the cycle route network as a whole.

For a different landscape, the Kastel Rock Path passes through a red sandstone landscape with striking rock formations. Panoramic views of the Saar Valley open up across the Pinschbach Valley and from the Altfels rock. Kastel-Staadt’s Roman theatre also has a 2.5-kilometre Archaeological Adventure Trail.

At Saarburg Castle, large sections of the enclosing walls and a residential tower have been preserved. Several viewing platforms and the tower offer panoramic views of the Saar Valley. In Konz, part of a cold-water pool about four metres high has been preserved from the Roman imperial palace. The former terrace offers views of the Moselle and Saar rivers, as well as the surrounding mountains.

In Tawern, the Roman roadside settlement of Tabernae is considered the origin of the town. It was established shortly before the turn of the era on the Roman main road from the Moselle via Metz to Rome. A model of the settlement at a scale of 1:75 is on display in the pavilion; the large reconstructed temple complex is also located in the forest. The free ARGO app lets you view it on site at its original size and as a 360-degree augmented reality display.

The Viez Route offers further regional themes: fruit growers, fine-fruit distillers, farmers, hoteliers and restaurateurs along the route provide information, regional recipes and experiences centred on Viez. Freudenburg Castle Ruins date back to a castle built in the 14th century to control the military road between Trier and Metz.
