Public recreation spots in the village, nature and local history offer different ways to spend your stay. Whether you would rather hike, spend time at the lake or visit historic sites is a choice you can make based on these specific offerings.

Forest and Hiking Trails

Holzerath’s forest covers 486 hectares and consists of coniferous forest, deciduous trees and coppice. A large part of it was designated Core Zone III of Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park in 1980. Wild daffodils and orchids grow in the Enterbach Valley Nature Reserve.

Stage 26 of the Saar-Hunsrück Trail runs right past Holzerath. If you are planning to hike the long-distance trail, check the current route in advance. Above the village, a hiking shelter offers a place to rest with views across the region; check its availability and condition locally before your visit.

Recreation at Holzerath Lake

The Holzerath Lake recreation area is about a 15-minute walk from Holzerath, in the Holzerath Forest. The facilities include a foot-wading pool and a children’s swing. There is also a barbecue hut, making it a good spot for an outing. The lake is considered suitable for swimming. Before swimming, check the conditions on site and the water quality.

On Sundays and public holidays, four local clubs take turns providing refreshments at Holzerath Lake. They offer spit-roasted pork, grilled sausages and drinks. Offerings may vary by season or date, so check in advance whether the clubs will be serving refreshments on the day you plan to visit.

Recreation and History in the Village

Below the civic hall on Schulstraße is a well-maintained public beach volleyball court. Check its condition before visiting, as public recreation facilities can change. The public village square has benches and a pavilion, as well as space to play boules. So, in the village, you will find both a place to play beach volleyball and a gathering spot with room for boules.

Holzerath was first mentioned in 1265. At the boundary with Bonerath, a wayside cross erected in 1871 stands beside a soldier’s grave from 1945. The village’s first mention in historical records and these two historic landmarks near the boundary offer different points of reference for exploring Holzerath’s history.
