Walshausen lies in the Zweibrücken Hills. The Felsalb flows through the village, and the Weiherbach joins it in the town center. Hiking trails, opportunities for horseback riding and historic buildings offer different ways to enjoy a stay. The landscape and local history provide a tangible framework for planning your trip.

On foot and in the saddle

Walshausen offers independent hikes through forests and open countryside, as well as signposted hiking trails and a barefoot path. You can explore the surrounding area on your own or follow marked routes; the barefoot path offers a different experience from a traditional hike. A 25-meter-long slide is considered an attraction for children. If it is important to your visit, check its current condition in advance.

Horseback riding is another local option: horse farms offer riding in natural surroundings and equestrian facilities. Saga Reitschule Felsalbtal provides qualified riding lessons on Icelandic horses. As commercial activity offerings can change, check in advance to see whether lessons are currently available.

Local history and buildings

The village’s history points to the former settlement area of Felsalben, first mentioned as Felsalbia in 888. In 1730, Walshausen purchased the Felsalben common land. In 1735, after disputes with neighboring municipalities had been settled, the land was finally distributed among the citizens of Walshausen. The two dates mark different steps: the purchase was followed by the distribution of the land five years later.

The buildings also offer distinct historical perspectives. At Bahnhofstraße 6 stands a 19th-century building with a broad gable and a hipped roof, adjoining a stable. The former school at Mühlstraße 3 is a neoclassical stucco building with a raised ground floor. It was built in 1840/41 and extended in 1900. The village’s architecture therefore includes both a 19th-century building and a school with a precisely dated construction and extension history.

The Altschlossfelsen premium hiking trail leads to the rock formation of the same name, which is around 1.5 kilometers long.

The Southwest Palatinate also offers historic and culinary attractions: Gräfenstein Castle provides insights into medieval life, and Berwartstein Castle is the only castle complex in the Palatinate that is still inhabited today.
