Schönau in the Wasgau: Nature and Castle Trails

Schönau (Pfalz) is located in the Wasgau, in the Palatinate Forest Nature Park on the upper Sauerbach. The surrounding area is characterized by forests, castles and rocky landscapes, viewpoints and marked hiking trails. This gives the location a clear profile: the landscape and hiking are central, alongside the castles. The starting points are specific for planning: the Franco-German Castle Trail begins in Schönau, and the eastern loop also starts here.

The 33-kilometer Franco-German Castle Trail is recommended as a two-day hike. Alongside it runs a 15-kilometer eastern loop from Schönau over the Wegelnburg ridge to Fleckenstein and back through the Sauertal valley. The route lengths offer two different approaches to planning: 33 kilometers, with a recommendation to allow two days, or the shorter loop with its own route. Check trail conditions before setting out.

A cross-border castle route also connects Schönau with castle ruins in the Palatinate Forest-North Vosges Biosphere Reserve. The castles included are Wegelnburg, Löwenstein and Blumenstein. In addition to its specific hiking routes, the town is therefore linked to a cross-border castle landscape.

The Southern Palatinate as a wider region

Beyond Schönau, you can also explore the wider travel destination of the Southern Palatinate. The Palatinate Forest shapes the landscape there. Well-maintained, marked trails lead through dense forests, over gentle hills and past red sandstone cliffs. The Teufelstisch near Hinterweidenthal is 14 meters high and a popular excursion destination. The Altschlossfelsen premium hiking trail leads to the rock formation of the same name, a massif around 1.5 kilometers long.

Culture is also part of the region’s appeal. The German Shoe Museum in Hauenstein, located in a former shoe factory, presents the 140-year tradition of shoe production, the development of the shoe industry in the Southern Palatinate and the manufacture of shoes. Gräfenstein Castle offers insights into medieval life. Berwartstein Castle is the only castle complex in the Palatinate that is still inhabited today. Alt-Dahn is one of the three Dahner castles, which are described as popular excursion destinations.

A range of leisure and culinary themes adds further variety: the Felsland Badeparadies in Dahn is known as a place for relaxation and wellness offerings. Mountain bikers from all over Germany take part in the WasgauBike Marathon. The Franco-German farmers’ market in Hinterweidenthal offers culinary highlights. These examples are part of the wider travel destination of the Southern Palatinate and complement the description of Schönau with distinct regional themes.
