At Kahlenberg, Wasgaublick is located above Schindhard’s sports ground. The viewpoint is right on the Felsenland Sagenweg, the Hahnfels Tour and the Pfälzer Waldpfad. From here, you can see across Schindhard to the ruins of Drachenfels Castle. The town is a state-recognized health resort amid red sandstone formations and is connected to the cross-border Palatinate Forest-North Vosges Biosphere Reserve.

Hikes with Different Timeframes

The Forest Adventure Trail starts at the Schindhard sports ground car park. The hike is about 11 kilometers long, takes three to four hours, and leads through open woodland, past viewpoints and rocks, and across pastures and orchards. The stated duration is a guide for planning your time; check trail conditions locally.

Another, moderately difficult hike is 3.3 kilometers long. It leads through oak and pine forests, along switchback paths and across meadows to rock formations and viewpoints. Sure-footedness is required on this route; terrain and safety conditions may vary. You can choose between a longer hike with a stated timeframe and a shorter route with an explicitly described level of difficulty.

Schindhard on the Felsenland Sagenweg

The Felsenland Sagenweg, about 86 kilometers long, passes through Schindhard on its second stage between Erfweiler and Bundenthal. Along the way, the route first passes the southern Kahlenberg viewpoint near Schindhard and then the town itself. Wasgaublick is right on this route as well as two other named trails. Check for current trail notices before setting out on a stage.

Protected Group of Buildings and Distinctive Rocks

Schindhard’s protected group of listed buildings includes St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, four half-timbered houses and a wayside cross. The half-timbered buildings include examples dating from 1753, 1789 and 1810. Access to some buildings may be restricted.

Rocks are also a defining feature of the area. The area around Schindhard and the neighboring Bärenbrunnertal valley has eight major climbing peaks or massifs. At 40 meters, Klosterwand is considered the tallest rock formation there. If you plan to climb, check access and seasonal rock closures in advance.

Plan Your Mountain Bike Ride and Journey

There are mountain bike trails around Schindhard. Tours 11 to 20 are considered easy to reach; Tour 13 covers 80 kilometers through the Dahner Felsenland, with Schindhard at its center. The trails add a longer mountain bike route to the area’s walking options.

The Felsenland Sagenweg is accessible year-round by train to Hinterweidenthal or Bad Bergzabern, followed by a local bus. From May to October, the Bundenthaler and Felsenland-Express excursion trains also run on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Check timetables and seasonal services before traveling.

When looking for a hotel in Schindhard, you might first consider what kind of outing you want to shape your stay around: a hike with a stated duration, a stage of the Felsenland Sagenweg, climbing or a mountain bike tour. Then tailor your plans to the relevant trail and travel information.
