Seven signposted circular hiking trails make Rieschweiler-Mühlbach a clear destination for hiking. They are suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers, and connect to longer regional hiking and cycling routes. This offers two distinct options: a self-contained circular walk or a connection to regional routes. To choose, consider whether you prefer a complete loop or joining a larger network of routes. Check the signage before setting off, as trail markings may change.

The Bankräubertour is a circular hike that starts at Rieschweiler station and passes through the town centre, over Dorfberg and Mittelberg, through agricultural landscapes, and along the Schwarzbach Valley. There are 17 benches along the way where you can take a break. The route links sections through the town with the named stops and a variety of landscapes. If you are looking for a specific route for your hike, the station, town centre, Dorfberg, Mittelberg and Schwarzbach Valley provide clear points of reference.

The Bankräubertour also features the local Sellemols displays. Large-format photographs of historical farming scenes are mounted on former farmhouses along the route. The images spread the theme along the trail and connect the hike with a glimpse of farming in the past. You can therefore experience the route as a cultural attraction as well as a circular walk through the town and countryside. Individual panels may require maintenance.

Southwest Palatinate: Landscape and Culture

The Palatinate Forest shapes the landscape of the wider Southwest Palatinate travel destination. Well-maintained, waymarked trails lead through dense forests, over gentle hills and past striking red sandstone cliffs. The Altschlossfelsen Premium Hiking Trail leads to the rock formation of the same name, which is around 1.5 kilometres long. The Teufelstisch near Hinterweidenthal is 14 metres high and a popular excursion destination. These landscape highlights belong to the Southwest Palatinate; they should be distinguished from the hiking trails in Rieschweiler-Mühlbach.

Another regional highlight is the history of shoe production. Hauenstein’s German Shoe Museum, housed in a former shoe factory, showcases the 140-year tradition of shoe production, the development of the footwear industry in the Southwest Palatinate, and the manufacture of shoes. Gräfenstein Castle adds a medieval touch to the region’s historic architecture and offers a glimpse into life in that era. Berwartstein Castle is the only castle in the Palatinate that is still inhabited today; Alt-Dahn is one of the three Dahn castles, which are popular excursion destinations.

Other attractions round out the picture of the Southwest Palatinate: The Felsland Badeparadies in Dahn is known as a place for relaxation and wellness. Mountain bikers come from all over Germany to take part in the WasgauBike Marathon. The German-French farmers’ market in Hinterweidenthal offers culinary highlights. Alongside hiking and landscapes, the wider travel destination therefore appeals to a range of interests, including history, wellness, mountain biking and food.
