Geiselberg lies at an elevation of around 420 metres above sea level in the Holzland region, on the western side of the Palatinate Forest Nature Park. When planning your trip, you can choose between individual local discoveries and a longer hike. Geiselberg is a stop on the typical two-day Holzland Trail tour.

Local destinations and their distinct highlights

Local highlights include historic washing fountains on the edge of the forest, the Panorama Trail, a route offering scenic views, Hirschalbtal valley and the Grauhansenfelsen rock formation. Each offers a different focus: the Panorama Trail is all about the views, Hirschalbtal valley and Grauhansenfelsen offer their own landscape highlights, while the washing fountains provide a historic connection to the village. You can choose what to visit based on whether you are more interested in the landscape or the village’s history.

Hiking the Holzland Trail and Nordic walking

The Holzland Trail is characterised by the landscapes of the Palatinate Forest and its rock formations; Geiselberg is considered a stop on its typical two-day tour. This type of tour differs from choosing individual local destinations: your plans can centre either on a multi-day hike or on exploring Geiselberg’s local highlights.

Nordic walking routes in Geiselberg start at the sports ground. Route plans are available to download from the regional Nordic walking page. Check the current trail markers before setting out; the availability of the plans may also change.

Forestry history and red sandstone

Forestry played a greater role than agriculture in Geiselberg’s history because the soil was not very fertile. At the beginning of the 20th century, red sandstone was quarried in the nearby forest for housebuilding. The village church was also built from red sandstone in the 1950s. Here, the stone connects two distinct aspects of the past: its use as a building material for houses and its use in the construction of the church.

Practical information for your stay

The Geiselberg Grillplatz has ten motorhome pitches. The number and facilities may change, so check this information before your trip. The municipal library offers free borrowing. The size of the collection and access arrangements may change, so it is advisable to check the current terms before visiting.

The wider SĂĽdwestpfalz region

The Palatinate Forest shapes the landscape of the wider Südwestpfalz travel region. Well-maintained, marked trails lead through dense forests, over gentle hills and past striking red sandstone rocks. The Teufelstisch near Hinterweidenthal is a popular excursion destination and stands 14 metres high. The Altschlossfelsen premium hiking trail leads to the rock formation of the same name, a massif around 1.5 kilometres long. Cultural attractions are also part of the region: Burg Gräfenstein offers insights into medieval life. Hauenstein’s German Shoe Museum, housed in a former shoe factory, presents the 140-year tradition of shoe production, the development of the shoe industry in Südwestpfalz and the manufacture of shoes.
