Busenberg combines striking sandstone formations with a tangible architectural history. The Drachenfels castle ruins stand atop two steep, narrow sandstone cliffs and overlook the hills of the Palatinate Forest/North Vosges Biosphere Reserve. For a stay focused on hiking and culture, the village offers two distinct highlights: the landscape around the cliffs and the traces Drachenfels has left in the village’s history.

The Holzschuhpfad Trail and Drachenfels

The certified Busenberger Holzschuhpfad is a 360-degree loop around the village that connects local scenic highlights. Its stops include eleven viewpoints and the Drachenfels castle ruins. You can walk the entire loop or choose individual sections. When planning, the main choice is therefore between completing the full loop and taking a shorter section; both options are specifically provided for on the trail.

The ruins themselves are defined by their location on two narrow cliffs. What remains includes a rock chamber, a gatehouse and the remains of a flanking tower. Below the castle ruins, the DrachenfelshĂĽtte is a popular hiking stop with a beer garden and a simple regional menu. The WeiĂźensteiner Hof is a popular excursion destination with far-reaching views. These local recommendations add different options for refreshments and local history to the scenic highlights, for visitors interested in both.

Traces of Drachenfels in Busenberg

Drachenfels Castle was destroyed by citizens of Strasbourg in 1335. Its history did not end with the ruins: stone from the destroyed castle was later used in buildings in Busenberg. The Catholic parish church was built between 1760 and 1767 using this stone. The Schlösschen, a manor house in the village center, was also built from Drachenfels stone; it dates to 1778. The church and manor house thus mark two distinct periods in the history of the castle. Together with the surviving parts of the ruins, they offer a tangible insight into architectural history, the reuse of materials and Drachenfels’ long-standing presence in Busenberg.

Cliffs for views and climbing

Puhlstein is accessible year-round and offers views across the Wasgau region. Before visiting, check whether any temporary safety measures affect access. The 35-meter-high Schulerturm is part of the Drachenfels castle complex in Busenberg and can be reached via a signposted hiking trail to the castle. The rock offers numerous summit routes for experienced climbers. This part of the offering is aimed at a clearly defined group and differs from hiking the Holzschuhpfad.

Climbing crags around Busenberg may be temporarily closed during the bird breeding season. Restrictions can change, so check the latest notices before climbing.

Getting here and finding your way around the region

Busenberg is served by bus route 545 between Bad Bergzabern, Birkenhördt, Vorderweidenthal and Dahn. Timetables can change, so it is advisable to check departure times for your travel day. In the Felsenland, cycling routes follow paved forest and farm tracks away from main roads.

The wider setting of the SĂĽdwestpfalz region

Beyond Busenberg, the Südwestpfalz region offers a broader landscape and cultural setting. The Palatinate Forest shapes the landscape of the Südwestpfalz; well-developed, signposted trails lead through dense forests, over gentle hills and past impressive red sandstone cliffs. In Hauenstein, the German Shoe Museum, housed in a former shoe factory, presents the 140-year tradition of shoe production, the development of the shoe industry in the Südwestpfalz and the making of shoes. The 14-meter-high Devil’s Table near Hinterweidenthal is a popular excursion destination. These are distinct regional highlights: they broaden the picture of the Südwestpfalz, while Drachenfels, the Holzschuhpfad and architectural history are Busenberg’s specific focal points.
