Waldhambach lies in the Kaiserbach valley below Madenburg Castle and is considered a starting point for extended hikes in the Palatinate Forest and along the Wine Route, especially on the certified long-distance hiking trail, the Palatinate Wine Trail. If you are planning to cover longer distances during your stay, this makes hiking a clear focus. Nearby is Madenburg Castle, a large castle ruin above Eschbach. Historically, it served as the administrative seat of a district that included Waldhambach among its villages.

There is a motorhome parking area in Waldhambach. Check availability and conditions locally before you arrive.

In the wider destination of the Southern Wine Route

The Southern Wine Route borders the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve. The wider destination offers a range of trails that explore the forest and nature from different perspectives. The Climate and Nature Experience Trail at Silz Lake has two circular routes of different lengths. Topics include forests, biodiversity, drinking water production and water retention. When choosing a route, you can focus on the topics that interest you or compare the two circuits, which differ in length.

The Trifels Experience Trail and the Keschde Experience Trail also have different focuses. The Trifels Experience Trail is an easy 3.6-kilometre route with 18 play and information stations. The Keschde Experience Trail is a 6.1-kilometre circular route around Föhrlenberg that is suitable for pushchairs and focuses on the Palatinate sweet chestnut. Seasonal conditions may affect access to this route.

The Silz Wildlife and Hiking Park offers another perspective on nature and wildlife. It covers more than 100 hectares and is home to 400 animals from 15 European species. The park also has a large adventure playground. Animal numbers and park facilities may change over time.

Castles, exhibitions and regional culture

Madenburg Castle has a permanent exhibition on its history. At Landeck Castle, a 25-metre-high platform offers views across the Vorderpfalz towards the Odenwald and Black Forest; visibility depends on the weather. Replicas of the Imperial Regalia are on display at Trifels Imperial Castle. These places offer different experiences, from castle history and views to historical exhibits.

The Museum unterm Trifels in Annweiler am Trifels covers the history of the town, Trifels Castle and the Hohenstaufen dynasty, as well as the development of the landscape in the Palatinate Forest. At the Paper Museum in Gleisweiler, you can make your own paper. This is possible on opening days or by arrangement; check the current arrangements before your trip.

Compare cycling and hiking routes

For cycling navigation, the “Cycling in the Southern Palatinate” map covers 27 signposted cycle paths and circular routes from the Rhine via the Southern Wine Route to the Palatinate Forest. Map editions and trail markings may be updated. The Castle Tour is designated as a 42.4-kilometre cycling circuit. On foot, the challenging Palatinate Hut Tour covers 19 kilometres and takes you to five huts serving regional specialities. This gives you a choice between a designated cycling circuit and a challenging hike with stops at huts, depending on your preferences. Routes and hut availability may vary seasonally; check these details when planning your trip.
