In Schweigen-Rechtenbach, several themes are at the forefront when planning a visit: winegrowing, guided themed walks and mountain biking. The wine trail shares information at several stops, while the guided tours explore a range of themes. Mountain bikers can choose from a network of marked routes. When choosing your stay, you can first decide which of these activities is your main focus.

Wine knowledge, guided walks and mountain biking

The local wine trail is 2.5 kilometres long and has nine stops covering winegrowing and related topics. The focus is therefore not only on the route itself, but also on learning about winegrowing. Check the current visiting conditions before your visit.

If you would prefer to join a guided tour, Schweigen-Rechtenbach offers themed walks about fairy tales, legends and red wine. The tours are offered year-round; the tours and dates that actually take place depend on the local programme. Before planning your stay, check which guided tour suits your visit.

Mountain bikers can choose from 20 marked MTB routes. The routes may include up to 25 percent singletrack. The size of the network and route details may change, so check the latest information before setting out. The singletrack figures describe a possible proportion of a route, not every tour as a whole.

The local tourist information office and the Palatinate Shop offer cycling and hiking maps, as well as information on accommodation, restaurants, wineries and events. Local visitor tips are also available. Opening hours and visitor arrangements may change; check the latest details before your visit.

There are three distinct ways to choose: the wine trail combines a short route with nine information stops; for a guided walk, the theme and programme date determine your choice; and for mountain biking, the route and its possible proportion of singletrack are relevant. These differences can help you tailor your stay to the experience you want, without treating the offerings as interchangeable.

More to explore in the wider Southern Wine Route destination

The wider Southern Wine Route destination offers additional landscape and cultural experiences. The Southern Wine Route borders the Palatinate Forest Nature Park Biosphere Reserve. At Landeck Castle, a 25-metre-high platform offers views across the Vorderpfalz towards the Odenwald and Black Forest; visibility depends on the weather. Trifels Imperial Castle displays replicas of the Imperial Regalia. The two examples offer different highlights: a panoramic view at one, and an exhibition of historical insignia at the other.

The Southern Wine Route’s themed trails also vary in length and content. The Trifels Experience Trail is 3.6 kilometres long, rated easy and features 18 play and learning stations. The Keschde Experience Trail is a 6.1-kilometre circular route around the Föhrlenberg that is suitable for pushchairs and focuses on the Palatinate sweet chestnut; seasonal conditions may affect access. At Silz Lake, two circular trails of different lengths on the Climate and Nature Experience Trail explore forests, biodiversity, drinking water production and water retention. The region therefore offers a choice of playful learning stations, nature topics and a themed circular route.

The Southern Wine Route also offers a range of cultural highlights. Madenburg Castle has a permanent exhibition on its history. The Museum unter dem Trifels in Annweiler am Trifels covers the history of the town and Trifels Castle, the Hohenstaufen dynasty and the development of the Palatinate Forest landscape. At the Paper Museum in Gleisweiler, visitors can make their own paper; this activity is offered on opening days or by arrangement. Check in advance what options are currently available.

If you want to add cycling or nature experiences to your regional itinerary, there are other clearly defined options: the “Cycling in the Southern Palatinate” map covers 27 signposted cycle paths and circular routes from the Rhine, through the Southern Wine Route and as far as the Palatinate Forest; map editions and signposting may be updated. The Castle Tour is listed as a 42.4-kilometre circular cycle route, although routes may change. The challenging Palatinate Huts Tour runs for 19 kilometres and visits five huts serving regional specialities; the route and hut availability may vary seasonally. The main points to compare when planning are route length, difficulty and seasonal availability.
