Rinnthal lies in the Queich Valley, surrounded by striking red sandstone formations and extensive forests. Marked hiking trails lead through the landscape; from the rocks along the Höhenweg, the view stretches across the Palatinate Forest. The hikes vary in length, walking time and difficulty, so you can weigh up Rinnthal as a destination based on the kind of hiking day you have in mind.

Hiking Trails by Time and Difficulty

The Herzelweg loops around the village of Rinnthal. This easy hike is 9.4 kilometres long and takes about three hours. The HĂĽttenweg leads from Rinnthal to the JungpfalzhĂĽtte; the moderate 7.2-kilometre route is listed as taking about two and a half hours. In direct comparison, the Herzelweg is 2.2 kilometres longer and takes roughly half an hour more to walk. The trails also have different difficulty ratings.

A shorter option is the Maronenweg: it leads to sweet chestnut trees below the Kostenfelsen and is an easy, 3.5-kilometre circular walk. Allow about an hour; the route is suitable for pushchairs. The Höhenweg reaches the Buchholzfelsen and Wackelstein. Its rocks offer views across the Palatinate Forest, a different focus from the chestnut trees at the Kostenfelsen.

The Römerweg follows broad forest tracks through the Palatinate Forest and is described as a circular route with cultural and historical features. It can be reached by train and bus. On the Triftweg, navigation starts in the village centre: the starting point is opposite the church, by the information and hiking board. Signs along the route explain the historic timber rafting; there is a place to rest opposite the Fischerhütte.

When choosing a hike, the current condition of the trails is also part of planning. The municipality notes that some hiking trails may be partially or fully closed seasonally to protect nature and species. So check the official route page before setting out.

Another Way to Spend the Day

The Valley of Generations offers a focus of its own alongside the hiking trails. Open during the day, the leisure area includes a forest stage, a tree house, a play meadow, a rope and climbing course, a sandstone atrium and a log cabin. Rinnthal therefore offers a range of ways to spend the day: longer or shorter trails, culturally and historically themed hikes, and a leisure area with various facilities.

Cycling Through Rinnthal

The Queichtal Cycle Route also reaches the village: it runs from Hauenstein via Wilgartswiesen to Rinnthal and continues here as a cycle path alongside the road towards Annweiler am Trifels. This gives you a specific route through the village to consider when planning; the hiking trails described, by contrast, vary in distance, walking time and character. You can decide whether you want a hike, a bike ride or a mix of different activities to be the focus of your stay.
