In Ramberg, hiking trails meet an unusual local history: the Brushmakers’ Museum is dedicated to a craft that shaped the daily lives of many families, and several trails lead to castles or through the surrounding area. For trip planning, it is worth first comparing the distance and route type: there are shorter and longer hikes, circular routes and a designated one-way trail.

Hiking: Compare Route Types and Distances

The Ramberg town center hiking car park on Konrad-Adenauer-Platz is accessible by car via the L506/Hauptstraße and by bus routes 521 and 522. The public car park is accessible at all times; check the access rules again before you travel. It serves as a starting point for the Brushmakers’ Trail, the Three Castles Trail, the Museum Trail, the Market Trail and the Ramburg Trail. Ramberg-Dernbach Nordic walking routes 2 and 3 also start directly at the car park. Bus routes and trail routes may change, so it is advisable to check the latest conditions before setting off.

The Museum Trail is an approximately eight-kilometer hike from the Brushmakers’ Museum to Drei Buchen. At about eleven kilometers, the Brushmakers’ Trail is longer and designated as a circular route around Ramberg and Dernbach; it starts at the Brushmakers’ Museum. Along this trail are the Keschdebusch natural monument and, after a section through the forest, the Lourdes Grotto near Dernbach. The distance and route type make it easy to compare the two trails, without specifying a walking time.

For a longer hike, the Three Castles Trail offers an approximately 17-kilometer circular route, rated as moderate, to the ruins of Neuscharfeneck, Meistersel and Ramburg, as well as to viewpoints. By contrast, the Market Trail is a 13-kilometer one-way hike along historic paths. It follows the route taken when residents of Ramberg and Dernbach carried goods to the market in Landau. The Palatinate Wine Trail passes directly by Ramberg and is connected by an access trail. From Ramberg, you can hike the Palatinate Chestnut Trail in several directions. Check the route, markings and conditions before setting off.

Brushmaking and Castles

The Brushmakers’ Museum presents the craft of brushmaking, the development of the brush industry and family life in Ramberg from 1780 to 1970. The extent to which the industry was rooted in local history is shown by a figure from 1889: 225 of the 255 families living there at the time depended on making or selling brushes.

A permanent exhibition extends the theme to the castles in the surrounding area. Entitled “The Castles of the Ramburg Valley,” it covers Ramburg, Neuscharfeneck Castle and Meistersel Castle. The castles also feature on hiking routes, but the exhibition and trails offer different ways to explore them: the museum focuses on their presentation, while the Three Castles Trail takes you on a circular route to the ruins and viewpoints.

Ramburg stands on the 444-meter-high Schlossberg, about 1.5 kilometers northwest of Ramberg. The name of the castle that gave the town its name is documented as early as 1163; Ramburg was probably founded as a Hohenstaufen imperial castle in the 12th century. Neuscharfeneck was built at the beginning of the 13th century. Its shield wall is 58 meters long and twelve meters thick—a specific architectural detail that can be explored alongside the castle exhibition and the hike to the ruins.

The town’s history extends beyond brushmaking. St. Lawrence’s Church in Ramberg was built in 1833 on the site of the former Church of the Holy Spirit. Altar figures dating from the mid-18th century have been preserved. Those interested in historical connections can trace different layers of the past: the documented castle name, the probable founding of Ramburg, the later church and the long history of brushmaking. Check the current visitor information before visiting the museum.

If castles are your main interest, you can treat the exhibition and the Three Castles Trail as separate activities. Find suitable hotels in Ramberg and, before setting off, compare your chosen route with the latest trail conditions.
