Discover Kirrweiler (Pfalz) in different ways: an art trail runs through the village and surrounding vineyards, while hiking options range from around three kilometres to a 15-kilometre loop. Historic buildings and the Marienkapelle, a pilgrimage site, add to the range of attractions. When planning, first decide what kind of day you want: art along the way, a shorter route or an extended hike.

Art trail between the village and vineyards

The Kirrweiler Art Trail runs through the village and surrounding vineyards, with artworks lining the route. In the Kirrweiler section, there are three loop options ranging from 3.5 to 8.2 kilometres. The art trail also continues through Maikammer and Sankt Martin. The artworks make the route itself the cultural focus, rather than marking just one destination.

Hiking: from the Kropsbach to the long loop

Kirrweiler has an extensive network of walking and resting places. At the local level, Kirrweiler owns 596 hectares of forest in the Palatinate Forest. Regionally, the Southern Wine Route borders the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve and Nature Park. For a shorter walk, the approximately three-kilometre Kropsbachauweg follows the Kropsbach stream. A much longer option is the 15-kilometre circular hike in the Kirrweiler Hinterwald. It starts at the Breitenstein car park and passes Kanzelfelsen, Röhringsbrunnen and Helmbachweiher. The contrast between the streamside path and the long loop with three named destinations helps you choose the kind of hike you prefer.

Local history and pilgrimage site

The Edelhof was built in the late 16th century as a residence for the knights and ministeriales of the former castle lords. Kirrweiler also retains a restored section of the town wall with a tower. The Marienkapelle by the cemetery is considered a pilgrimage site. Temporary open-air exhibitions are regularly held along the Kropsbach section behind the Edelhof car park. As dates may change, check before your visit whether an exhibition is running during your trip.

Wine trail and getting around

The Biblical Wine Trail is considered easy and flat, and suitable for pushchairs and people with disabilities. The trail is connected to Maikammer-Kirrweiler station; you can reach the centre of Kirrweiler on foot or by Palatina bus. Check current timetables and routes before travelling.

Cycling and regional cuisine

Kirrweiler is considered a starting point for cycling tours and a destination for wine tastings at traditional wine taverns, wine shops and restaurants, as well as for regional cuisine.

More trails in the Southern Wine Route

There are more themed trails in the wider Southern Wine Route destination. The TrifelsErlebnisWeg is 3.6 kilometres long, rated easy and features 18 play and learning stations. The Keschde-Erlebnisweg is a 6.1-kilometre circular route around the Föhrlenberg, suitable for pushchairs, and focuses on the Palatinate sweet chestnut. The routes have different focuses: play and learning stations on one, the sweet chestnut on the other. Seasonal conditions can affect access to the Keschde-Erlebnisweg.
