Edenkoben combines distinctive architectural history with winegrowing and an extensive range of hiking opportunities in the holiday region. In the town, sandstone buildings, monuments and museums tell stories about a variety of historical topics. There is also a wine trail, an outdoor exercise facility and direct bus connections. This makes it possible to consider culture, wine and trails as separate focuses when planning a stay.

Sandstone, Monuments and Local History

A defining feature of the townscape is the group of buildings from the GrĂĽnderzeit and the turn of the century, most of which were built from dressed red sandstone. The older building stock dates back even further, including houses from the mid-to-late 16th century and from the 18th century. These time periods give the architectural history several clearly distinguishable eras, rather than reducing it to a single period.

The Peace Monument combines an open memorial hall with busts and medallions, an allegorical ceiling mosaic and a horseman carrying a palm branch of peace. Its roof terrace offers expansive views across the Rhine Plain. Another historic site is the protected water supply system, with a sandstone spring chamber, inlet basin, water reservoir and sluice chamber. The Protestant Church stands on Ludwigsplatz.

Winegrowing and Museums

Villa Ludwigshöhe near Edenkoben was built from 1846 to 1851 as the summer residence of Ludwig I. Today, it houses an exhibition of works by the Impressionist Max Slevogt and a historic kitchen installed in 1852. The building thus brings together the history of a summer residence, an art exhibition and a specific detail of its historic furnishings. Check the current exhibition status before visiting.

The Museum of Winegrowing and Local History is located in the former home of monastery administrator Konrad Winkelblech. Its exhibits include original winegrowing equipment, historic cooperage tools and other local crafts. The long history of winegrowing is also tangible: an early record from Lorsch, dating to 769, documents its existence in Edenkoben.

The Edenkoben Wine Trail focuses on the grape varieties grown in the area and is presented by the local wine queen. Alongside the historical record and museum exhibits, it offers another way to explore the subject, with grape varieties at its heart. The i-Punkt also offers a selection of wines and sparkling wines from local wineries.

Hiking and Exercise

The hiking opportunities in the Edenkoben holiday region include 400 kilometers of newly organized and marked long-distance and circular trails. Regional routes and trails include the Palatinate Wine Trail, the Palatinate Hut Tour, vineyard trails and the Path of Poems. This selection ranges from routes with region-wide names to trails whose themes are based on vineyards or poems. Routes and markings may change; check the latest information before setting out.

For exercise, the alla hopp! facility offers a practice circuit for mobility, coordination, endurance and strength, with levels for beginners and advanced users. The facility is freely accessible and free of charge for all generations. As access conditions may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before visiting.
