Burrweiler is a wine village on the edge of the Palatinate Forest. Above the village stands the pilgrimage church of St. Anna; the Modenbach Valley and its forest hut landscape also shape the village’s connection with nature. If you are planning a stay, you can focus on three different themes: culture, wine and hiking—with historic buildings and the Way of the Cross, wine tastings in cellars, or circular routes and connections to regional hiking trails.

Architectural History and St. Anna

Burrweiler’s sights include a Gothic village church dating from 1523, Renaissance archways from the former castle of the Counts of der Leyen, and the Ludwigsstift. A Way of the Cross dating from 1880 climbs uphill to St. Anna Chapel. Several examples of architecture and religious heritage are therefore at the heart of a visit: the church with its documented date, the Renaissance archways and the path up to the chapel. If you are planning the cultural part of your visit, these sights provide a thread leading from the village to the chapel.

Wine Tastings and Local Dining

Burrweiler’s wineries invite visitors to enjoy wine tastings in their cellars. The wines’ full-bodied flavor is associated with the region’s almost Mediterranean climate. Local options also include wine taverns, wine shops, winery restaurants and other local dining. You can explore the wine theme through a tasting or the different dining options. If you are planning a wine tasting, check availability with the winery before your visit; opening hours and dining arrangements may change.

Circular Trails and Landscape

For time outdoors, there are local circular trails and connections to regional hiking routes. St. Anna, above the village, is a prominent landmark, while the Modenbach Valley and forest hut landscape give the nature theme its own setting. You can focus your stay more on the historic buildings and Way of the Cross, or make more room for hikes. For practical planning, check trail conditions and hut opening hours in advance.

More to Explore in the Wider Destination of the Southern Wine Route

The wider destination of the Southern Wine Route also offers distinct cultural and nature experiences. The Southern Wine Route borders the Palatinate Forest Nature Park Biosphere Reserve. Landeck Castle has a 25-meter-high platform with views across the Vorderpfalz toward the Odenwald and Black Forest; visibility depends on the weather. The Imperial Castle of Trifels displays replicas of the Imperial Regalia. Madenburg Castle has a permanent exhibition on its history. The Museum unterm Trifels in Annweiler am Trifels provides information about the history of the town and Trifels Castle, the Hohenstaufen dynasty, and the development of the landscape in the Palatinate Forest.

The region’s trails also vary in format: the easy TrifelsErlebnisWeg is 3.6 kilometers long and includes 18 play and learning stations. The 6.1-kilometer Keschde-Erlebnisweg is a circular route around the Föhrlenberg that is suitable for strollers and focuses on the Palatinate sweet chestnut. There are two circular routes of different lengths at Silzer See, covering forests, biodiversity, drinking water production and water retention. At the Paper Museum in Gleisweiler, visitors can make their own paper; this is possible on opening days or by appointment. Check the current arrangements before your trip.
