The House of the Southeast Germans Local History Museum and a commemorative plaque at the site of the former synagogue offer two distinct points of connection with Böchingen’s local history. The museum presents material on Danube Swabian migration as well as exhibits from the Palatinate and Böchingen. Visits are available on weekends or by appointment; please arrange your visit in advance.

Local History Museum and Jewish Commemoration

The commemorative plaque at the former synagogue site recalls Böchingen’s Jewish heritage. Together with the local history museum, it offers two different perspectives on history: here, material on migration sits alongside exhibits related to the Palatinate and the town, while there, a plaque marks a former site of Jewish life. When visiting the museum, please bear in mind that visits are available on weekends or by appointment.

The Southern Wine Route as a Wider Setting

Beyond Böchingen, the broader Southern Wine Route destination offers further cultural and natural attractions. The Southern Wine Route borders the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve and Nature Park. This gives the landscape a distinct connection to the wider travel region, while the attractions and routes described each have their own particular themes.

Cultural History and Museums

Landeck Castle has a 25-metre-high platform. In suitable weather, the view from here stretches across the Vorderpfalz towards the Odenwald and Black Forest. Replicas of the Imperial Regalia are on display at Trifels Imperial Castle. Madenburg Castle has a permanent exhibition on its history. These attractions each have a different focus: views, displayed replicas, and an exhibition on the castle’s history.

The Museum unterm Trifels in Annweiler am Trifels is dedicated to the history of the town, Trifels Castle and the Hohenstaufen dynasty, as well as the development of the landscape in the Palatinate Forest. At the Paper Museum in Gleisweiler, you can make your own paper on opening days or by appointment. Check in advance for current opportunities to take part in this hands-on activity.

Trails, Cycling Routes and Nature Experiences

The adventure trails vary in length and terrain: the Trifels Adventure Trail is 3.6 kilometres long, follows a one-way route and has 18 play and learning stations; some digital content may change. The Keschde Adventure Trail is a 6.1-kilometre circular route around Föhrlenberg, suitable for pushchairs, and focuses on the Palatinate sweet chestnut. Seasonal conditions may affect access. At Silz Lake, the Climate and Nature Trail comprises two circular routes of different lengths covering forests, biodiversity, drinking-water production and water retention. The Monastery Loop at Eußerthal Abbey Church introduces visitors to the history of the former Cistercian monastery.

For cycling tours, the Cycling in the Southern Palatinate map includes 27 signposted cycle routes and circular tours, from the Rhine across the Southern Wine Route to the Palatinate Forest. Map editions and signage may be updated; check the latest information before setting out. The Castle Tour is listed as a 42.4-kilometre circular cycle route, although the route may change. The challenging Palatinate Hut Tour has a different focus: it is 19 kilometres long and takes you to five huts serving regional specialities. The route and hut availability may vary seasonally.

Another option in the wider Southern Wine Route destination is Silz Wildlife and Hiking Park. It covers more than 100 hectares and is home to 400 animals from 15 European species; the park also has a large adventure playground. Animal numbers and park facilities may change over time.
