Lambsheim can be explored through three distinct examples of its architectural history: the medieval Neutor Tower, the historic buildings along HauptstraĂźe and a 19th-century Neo-Romanesque parish church. The wider destination of Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis adds its own landscape, cycling and museum themes at other locations.

Architectural history in Lambsheim

The Neutor Tower, also known locally as the “little tower,” is the last visible and accessible remnant of Lambsheim’s medieval fortifications. As a standalone architectural landmark, it points to the town’s history of fortification. The historic town center is a designated conservation area; dense historic buildings shape the streetscape along Hauptstraße. In this way, a single remnant of the fortifications and an area defined by dense development represent two different scales.

The Protestant parish church adds a different architectural note. It is considered a prominent Neo-Romanesque sandstone church, was built between 1844 and 1847, and has a 69-meter-high tower. The two buildings differ both in date and function: one is the last visible remnant of a fortification, while the other is a 19th-century church. Together, they make it possible to distinguish between fortifications, historic street-front buildings and religious architecture in Lambsheim’s architectural history.

Landscape and cycling routes in Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis

The wider destination of Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis adds a distinct landscape perspective to the local history. Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis is centrally located between the Palatinate Forest and the Odenwald. Along the Rhine, it includes scenic Rhine meadows with areas resembling primeval forest and bathing lakes. This regional perspective provides a different setting from Lambsheim’s architectural landmarks: here, the focus is on the district’s landscapes and bodies of water.

Cycling routes are another distinct regional theme. Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis has numerous cycling routes through fields and floodplains. The Kraut-und-RĂĽben Cycle Route runs through green fields and villages and along the Rhine. This makes it possible to distinguish between the general range of cycling routes and the specifically named course of the Kraut-und-RĂĽben Cycle Route.

For water-related activities, Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis lists four district swimming pools. Another specific point of interest is Lake Schlicht between Neuhofen and Waldsee: its water surface covers 26 hectares, and the beach covers 54,000 square meters. These figures refer to different areas—the water surface and the beach—while the four district swimming pools are a figure for the district as a whole.

Museums and events in the region

The museums in Böhl-Iggelheim feature an exhibition on the Bechtold family’s dyeing business. In the 19th century, the family operated a black, blue and fine-dyeing workshop in Iggelheim; blue dyeing is recognized as intangible cultural heritage. This gives the region’s cultural offerings a specific craft theme connected to a historic family business.

A different focus can be found at the local history museum run by the Association for Nature Conservation and Local Heritage in Bobenheim-Roxheim. It is housed in the former Roxheim town hall and has the largest collection on the nature of the Rhine meadows in the Palatinate. The regional museum examples thus place the history of craftsmanship and the nature of the Rhine meadows side by side as distinct themes.

Since 2018, the Golden Hat Day has been celebrated annually in Schifferstadt. If you would like to plan your trip around this occasion, check the relevant event dates when making your plans.
