Two local history museums in historic half-timbered houses, churches with different architectural histories and Niederwiesenweiher offer various ways to discover Böhl-Iggelheim. Those interested in local history can explore topics relating to museums, architecture and the Iggelheim Kerwe festival. At the pond, the focus is on swimming in a natural setting and walks.

Local History Museums and Regional History

The two local history museums in Iggelheim are called Heimatmuseum Altes Rathaus and Heimatmuseum Altes Schulhaus. Both are housed in historic half-timbered buildings. In the wider travel destination of Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis, the museums in Böhl-Iggelheim also feature an exhibition about the Bechtold family’s dye works. In the 19th century, the family operated a black, blue and fast dye works in Iggelheim; blue dyeing is recognised as intangible cultural heritage. This adds a specific traditional craft to the broader story of local history.

Churches with Different Architectural Histories

The Protestant parish church in Iggelheim is a late Baroque hall church dating from 1755/56. Three of its tower storeys are remnants of the former church; the fourth storey was added in 1834. In Böhl, the Catholic Church of All Saints is a neo-Gothic sandstone ashlar building constructed in 1856/57. The Catholic Church of St Simon and Jude Thaddeus in Iggelheim dates from 1935/36 and contains two wooden statues of the saints, dating from around 1750. The Protestant church in Böhl has another architectural history: after a fire in 1906, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1908/09.

The Iggelheim Kerwe and Its Changing Programme

The Iggelheim Kerwe takes place every year on the third weekend in September and features a changing programme of live music. The Sunday programme alternates between a flea market and a vintage tractor gathering combined with a farmers’ market. If you are planning your trip around the Kerwe, check the latest date and programme in advance; both may change.

Niederwiesenweiher: Swimming Area and Natural Setting

Niederwiesenweiher is a gravel pit lake fed by groundwater and spring water. Gravel was extracted there until 1973. Reed beds and alluvial woodland characterise this natural area, which is protected as a landscape conservation area. Swimming in a natural setting and walks are possible at the pond. A small, shallow swimming area with a sandy beach is open for swimming at your own risk. Before visiting, check the latest swimming permissions and safety conditions, as well as the current landscape protection status.

Facilities and Getting Around

The Iggelheim Naturfreundehaus has a partially covered beer garden and a nature-oriented children’s playground in a traffic-free woodland setting. If these facilities are important to your plans, check the latest information, as the amenities may change. The Bürgerbus may also be useful for getting around: it has an access aid and can carry up to 18 people and two wheelchairs. Vehicle details may change, so check them before making specific plans.
