A bird park with more than twelve species, the Roxheim Old Rhine and a neoclassical church represent different sides of Bobenheim-Roxheim. To help you decide, it is useful to distinguish between the possible focuses: birdlife and floodplains, activities on the water, or architectural and local history. The specific attractions in the area offer clues about what might influence your choice of destination for your stay.

Nature and water in Bobenheim-Roxheim

More than twelve bird species live in the bird park in Bobenheim-Roxheim. Examples include flamingos, birds of prey, cranes, turacos and parrots. The selection ranges from striking waterbirds to birds of prey and parrots; the bird park offers its own focus alongside the area's landscapes.

The Roxheim Old Rhine is a historic former river course. In the eastern part of Bobenheim-Roxheim, five nature reserves lie within the Palatinate Rhine Meadows Landscape Conservation Area. Wetlands, reed beds and floodplain forest provide habitats for diverse flora and fauna. Here, the former river course and the varied habitats of the Rhine meadows are found side by side.

Swimming is permitted at Silbersee within the bathing areas marked by buoys. Canoeing, sailing, rowing and windsurfing are prohibited from November 1 to March 15. The permitted activities therefore vary by type and season. Before visiting, check whether the local water regulations have changed in the meantime.

Pilgrim route, churches and local history

The Palatinate Way of St. James begins in the northern part of the municipality and leads from Bobenheim-Roxheim toward Speyer. Beyond Speyer, it continues through the Palatinate Forest toward Hornbach. The local Bobenheim-Roxheim Way of St. James loop is a separate route: inaugurated in 2005, it offers a cycling tour through the history of the municipality.

Stops on the local loop include St. Mary Magdalene in Roxheim, the Protestant Church of Roxheim-Bobenheim and the Jewish cemetery. The tour meets at the open-air stage Im Busch; by car, you can reach it via exit Rheinufer 1 on the B9. There is no charge to take part in the tour. These details illustrate the difference between the regional route of the Palatinate Way of St. James and the themed circuit through local history.

St. Mary Magdalene in Roxheim was built in 1833/34 in the neoclassical style. Its organ has 37 stops. The church is also one of the stops on the local loop, bringing architectural history and the route together at one of the listed destinations. The local history museum run by the Association for Nature Conservation and Local Heritage is housed in the former Roxheim town hall and has the largest collection on the nature of the Rhine meadows in the Palatinate.

Traditional crafts also reflect the landscape: baskets were woven and reed mats made in the area, using willow and reeds from the wetlands. The floodplains and local craft traditions are therefore more than separate topics; plants from the wetlands also served as materials for this work.

Getting there and practical information

Bobenheim-Roxheim is served by a station on the Mannheim–Mainz main line, bus routes and nearby motorways. Services and road conditions can change, so check current options before travelling. When planning a visit to Silbersee, it is also important to distinguish between swimming permitted in the buoy-marked areas and the seasonal ban on certain water sports. For the local Way of St. James loop, the stated meeting point is the open-air stage Im Busch; the directions describe access via the specified B9 exit.

The Rhine-Palatinate District as a regional setting

The landscape of the Rhine-Palatinate District is shaped by wooded Rhine meadows, fields, and vegetable and wine growing. Numerous cycling routes in the district pass through fields and floodplains. These include the Kraut-und-RĂĽben cycle route, which runs through green fields and villages and along the Rhine. This regional perspective complements the local nature and cultural attractions with a broader landscape setting. If you are planning a cycling tour in the district, check the current route descriptions and conditions.
