Ruppertsklamm is 1.5 kilometres long, while a guided wine tasting takes you through historic Oberlahnstein and Niederlahnstein. Lahnstein therefore offers different highlights for a stay: nature trails, cycling and local history. When looking for a hotel, you can start by considering which of these interests will shape your trip.

Hiking and cycling

Ruppertsklamm has been a designated nature reserve since 1936 and is part of both the Rheinsteig and the Lahnwanderweg. The route to the shelter includes small bridges, wooden walkways and adventurous sections. The hike to the shelter takes about 45 minutes and covers 235 metres of elevation gain. You can extend the loop to the Uhulay viewpoint, which offers views over the Lahn Valley and Lahnstein. The local hiking trail network is challenging, close to nature and consistently signposted.

Two long-distance cycling routes also meet in Lahnstein. Stage eight of the Lahnradweg runs from Lahnstein to Nassau over 22.7 kilometres; it is rated easy and includes 42 metres of climbing. As stage details may be revised by the route operator, it is worth checking the latest information before setting off. The routes offer different ways to plan your day: for the gorge hike, walking time and elevation gain are the main considerations; for the cycling stage, they are distance, difficulty rating and climb.

Local history on the Rhine

The Upper Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage Site extends as far as Lahnstein Gate, where the Rhine valley opens out into the Neuwied Basin. Kihrstor is the only surviving gate in Oberlahnstein’s town fortifications. Six towers and around 350 metres of town wall have also been preserved in Lahnstein.

Lahnstein’s museums explore local history from prehistory and the Roman era through the Middle Ages to the early modern period. Other topics include the mining heritage of Friedrichssegen and the carnival traditions of Martinsburg. A historical themed trail covers 20 sights in Oberlahnstein and Niederlahnstein, with information boards in German and English along the route. The guided tour series “Traces of 700 Years of Local History” focuses on medieval buildings, the lives of former residents and events that shaped the town over the centuries.

A striking building on the Rhine is the Löhnberger Mühle. This late neoclassical industrial building has a six-storey main structure, is a protected monument and forms part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Wine and brewery tour

The Schlenderweinprobe is a guided walk through historic Oberlahnstein and Niederlahnstein. Regional wines are served at six stops. A tour of the Lahnstein Brewery includes the brewery tower and tastings of three beers. The experiences offer different highlights: a walk with regional wines, or a look inside the brewery with beer tasting.

Rhein-Lahn as a wider region

The wider Rhein-Lahn destination includes the Rhein-Lahn district, which encompasses the area on the right bank of the Rhine at the mouth of the Lahn, the Lahn Valley as far as just short of Limburg near Diez, the southern foothills of the Westerwald towards the Lahn Valley, and the northern uplands of the Taunus between the Rhine and the Aar. The Roman Limes also crosses the district; remains are still visible today and form part of the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes UNESCO World Heritage Site.
