Holzhausen an der Haide combines traces of Roman fortifications, the history of technology, churches and nature activities. When planning a stay, it helps to distinguish between these themes: the fort and the Nicolaus August Otto Museum offer different approaches to history, while the cycle path and hiking options focus on other things. There are also the Sauerbrunnen spring and the outdoor swimming pool in the forest. If you are looking for a hotel for your visit, considering your main interest can help guide you towards places to visit.

Roman Traces at Holzhausen Fort

Holzhausen Fort lies on the north-western slope of the Grauer Kopf. Its fortification walls are up to three metres high; the fort is one of the best-preserved structures along the Limes. The remains include rectangular outer contours and remnants of towers. A semicircular inner wall is attributed to a shrine. A signposted, 1.5-kilometre forest path leads to the remains from Bäderstraße. Limes Cicerones occasionally offer guided walks and information events around the fort. As event dates may change, check the schedule before making plans.

The History of Technology at the Nicolaus August Otto Museum

The Nicolaus August Otto Museum offers a different perspective on technology. It displays some of the last original Otto engines; only a few examples remain worldwide. Almost all the exhibits are explained using multimedia. The museum therefore focuses on technical objects and how they are presented, while the outlines, towers and walls at the fort provide tangible points of reference. Free visits are possible by prior telephone appointment. Call to make an appointment and confirm the visit arrangements before travelling.

Churches and Remembrance in the Town

The Protestant Kreuz-Jakobus Church was built in 1764–1765 and extensively restored inside. Parts of the older gallery paintings can be viewed during church services; access depends on the arrangements for each service. The Catholic Herz-Jesu Church on Bäderstraße is an example of Neo-Romanesque brick architecture. The two churches offer different architectural points of interest: the building period and restored interiors at one, and brick architecture at the other. A memorial stone in front of the town hall commemorates by name Holzhausen’s former Jewish residents.

Paths, a Spring and a Swimming Pool

The Sauerbrunnen is a natural spring with a high mineral content. A shady stop in the forest, it invites visitors to drink its spring water. There are also various ways to get active: parts of the former railway embankment have been converted into a cycle path. The Planet Trail and the Limes Route offer hiking opportunities to explore the landscape and traces of Roman rule around Holzhausen. Cycling and hiking are thus different options to consider when planning your stay.

Holzhausen Forest Swimming Pool has integrated swimming and non-swimmer pools. As seasonal operating arrangements may change, check the current conditions before visiting.
