The Oberes Baybachtal Dream Loop passes through Niedert, giving the village a direct connection to a longer hike. The route takes in quiet stream valleys, meadows and woodland, as well as views of the HunsrĂĽck and Eifel. This puts a clearly defined activity alongside the destination itself.

Route length and character

The circular route is 15.6 kilometres long, is classified as difficult and takes about four hours. This combination helps you gauge the time required and the character of the hiking day: the loop is a longer activity in its own right, rather than a short detour. When planning, allow for the approximate duration of the entire circuit; the difficulty rating adds another useful detail to this time estimate.

Waypoints and culture along the route

On the section towards Niedert, the trail passes through a meadow valley and by the Fuchsbau viewpoint. The rest of the route also includes the Eifelblick and Ackersberg viewpoints.

The circular route follows the Baybach past seven mills. Other points of interest along the way include the StriedersmĂĽhle, the HeilbrĂĽnnchen pilgrimage site with its Wendelinus Chapel, and six modern art installations. The StriedersmĂĽhle is open at weekends; check the latest opening information before visiting.

The Niederter Mühle is located within Niedert’s municipal area. It was a former Electoral Palatinate ban mill, is documented as far back as 1630, was renovated in the 1970s and is now privately owned.

The wider setting: Rhein-HunsrĂĽck

The wider setting is the broader travel destination of Rhein-Hunsrück: the Rhein-Hunsrück district encompasses large areas of the Hunsrück, which is part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left-bank section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The district also includes large parts of the Hunsrück plateau and the quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald; in the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary.

Across the Rhein-Hunsrück district, there are numerous hiking trails to choose from, including the certified Soonwaldsteig premium hiking trail. Extensive, well-developed and signposted cycle paths run along the Rhine and through the Hunsrück. This makes it easy to distinguish regional hiking and cycling options from the specific circular route through Niedert. If you go cycling, it’s worth checking the current condition of the trail you plan to use.

The Museum Haus der regionalen Geschichte in Kastellaun presents the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War through exhibitions, information panels and original documents. From 25 April 2026, the museum is open Thursdays and Fridays from 12 noon to 5 pm, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11 am to 5 pm. Check the opening hours again before travelling.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley includes parts of the HunsrĂĽck-Mittelrhein municipal association and the town of Boppard in the Rhein-HunsrĂĽck district; it was recognised in 2002.
