Hollnich brings together cycle routes, walking options and tangible traces of local history, offering different reasons to stay. The Schinderhannes Cycle Route passes through Hollnich on its route between Emmelshausen and Simmern. When looking for a hotel in Hollnich, it is worth first deciding what matters most to you: a bike ride, a hike or the village’s history.

Planning cycling and hiking

The 38-kilometre Schinderhannes Cycle Route follows the former HunsrĂĽck railway line from Emmelshausen via Kastellaun to Simmern. It is considered a route away from heavily trafficked roads, passing through HunsrĂĽck landscapes and offering views across the HunsrĂĽck heights. It is suitable for recreational cyclists, groups and families with children. Another cycle route is the HunsrĂĽck-Mosel Cycle Route: its 30 kilometres connect Kastellaun with Treis-Karden. The length and route provide two specific points of reference, without implying anything about difficulty or the time needed to complete it.

The Schinderhannes Trail connects the Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig and the Soonwald-Steig through the HunsrĂĽck cultural landscape. It crosses the HunsrĂĽck and runs in part through picturesque stream valleys. All trailheads are accessible by public transport; check current connections before setting out. Another hiking route, the Burgstadt Trail, passes through woodland and along old postal roads. Its features include a water lily pond, a Jewish cemetery, a picnic meadow and a viewpoint towards the Soonwald. One access point is on the Schinderhannes Cycle Route near Spesenrother Weg.

Village history and historic buildings

Hollnich is documented in records dating to 1178. At Dorfstraße 16 stand a wellhead made of quarry slate and a well house. At Dorfstraße 22 is a slate-clad half-timbered house with a hipped roof and mansard roof, dating from the first third of the 19th century. Its agricultural wing forms a unified historic complex with the house. These architectural details offer tangible points of reference for the village’s history.

Traditions also shape the village’s character: the Backes, or communal bakehouse, in the village centre was revived in connection with local customs. Around 1360, Hollnich was briefly under Hessian control. In Steingasse, older features in houses, agricultural areas and a car repair shop are being renewed. Different layers of time thus stand side by side: the early written record, the 19th-century half-timbered ensemble and the renewal of older features in the village.

The wider Rhein-HunsrĂĽck region

The wider travel destination of Rhein-Hunsrück includes extensive areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left-bank section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Its landscapes include the Hunsrück plateau and quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald; in the Middle Rhine Valley area, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary. Parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein municipal association and the town of Boppard in the district belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, which was inscribed in 2002.

For a longer hike beyond Hollnich, the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig offers a regional route: it runs across the Hunsrück via Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard and covers a total of 410 kilometres in 27 stages. In Kastellaun, the Museum Haus der regionalen Geschichte presents the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War through themed exhibitions, information panels and original documents. From 25 April 2026, it is open Thursdays and Fridays from 12 to 5 p.m., and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check opening times before your visit.
