Heyweiler lies above the Baybach, which flows past the village to the north and is a tributary of the Moselle. The village is largely surrounded by forest. For a hiking-focused stay, the routes offer different points of reference: the Baybach Gorge route has a designated starting point in Heyweiler; the Lippertsweg connects several districts via old paths and passes through typical landscapes of the VorderhunsrĂĽck. This means a named gorge route and a path linking several districts offer distinct focal points alongside one another.

Hiking in Baybach Gorge

The Baybach Gorge route is 10.5 kilometres long; the Heyweiler hiking car park is a designated starting point. Below Heyweiler, the slate mountains in Baybach Gorge have a distinctly Alpine feel. Sure-footedness and sturdy footwear are essential. When planning the hike, consider both its length and its character: the distance gives an indication of its scope, while the advice about sure-footedness and footwear describes the demands of the hike. Take both into account when choosing this route as the focus of your stay.

The Lippertsweg and its variants

Variant 1 of the Lippertsweg starts in Beltheim, goes via Mannebach and Heyweiler, and returns to Beltheim; it is about 15 kilometres long. The Lippertsweg runs for about 26 kilometres through the typical landscapes of the Vorderhunsrück. Following old paths, it connects the six districts of Beltheim, Mannebach, Heyweiler, Frankweiler, Sevenich and Schnellbach. So the roughly 15 kilometres refer to a specific loop that returns to Beltheim, while the approximately 26 kilometres describe the longer route through six districts. The figures therefore differ not only in distance: Variant 1 has a clearly defined circular route, while the longer Lippertsweg connects several districts. If you are choosing between the two, the route’s shape is a useful consideration alongside its length.

Compared with the Baybach Gorge route, Variant 1 of the Lippertsweg is longer, and the approximately 26-kilometre route is the longest of the three distances mentioned. At the same time, the gorge route is distinguished by its designated starting point and the demands it places on sure-footedness and footwear. When choosing a hike for your stay, you can therefore weigh up the distance, route and demands rather than deciding solely on the basis of the longest or shortest figure.

Village church and local history

The village church is part of Heyweiler’s history. In 1733, Heyweiler received permission to build its own village church. According to tradition, the simple chapel was built between 1733 and 1760 by eight or nine local families. The dates mark different parts of its history: 1733 marks the permission, while the period up to 1760 refers to the reported construction of the chapel. The church has a mechanical tower clock, and its side windows depict Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon. Alongside its construction history, the church therefore has two specific features: the mechanical clock and the Reformation motifs in the windows. In this way, local history adds a cultural focus to Heyweiler’s landscape and hiking attractions.
