Two clearly distinct routes give Gondershausen a specific appeal for a trip focused on hiking or cycling: the Rabenlay Premium Hiking Trail starts at Gunthershalle, while the Schinderhannes-Untermosel Cycle Route passes through the village. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether you would like to spend most of your time on foot or by bike.

Hiking the Rabenlay Premium Hiking Trail

The Rabenlay Premium Hiking Trail is 16.6 kilometers long and starts at Gunthershalle in Gondershausen. The route combines open views across fields with the Baybach Gorge and a forest lake, offering varied scenery along a single hike. Its length gives you a useful basis for planning your day. The hiking seal is valid until June 2027.

Cycling through Gondershausen

The Schinderhannes-Untermosel Cycle Route runs from Emmelshausen to Burgen and passes through Gondershausen. The 22.05-kilometer route is rated easy; along the way, there are views across the HunsrĂĽck toward the volcanic peaks of the Eifel. Unlike the Rabenlay trail, this route connects two towns. This lets you compare the routes by activity, distance, and course without treating their kilometer figures as an equivalent measure of effort.

To get to the cycle route, you can take the HunsrĂĽck Railway from Boppard to Emmelshausen and cycle from there toward Gondershausen. Check the timetable before your trip. The starting point is also useful when choosing a route: the cycle route continues to Burgen, while the Rabenlay trail starts at Gunthershalle.

The wider Rhein-HunsrĂĽck region

The district in the wider Rhein-Hunsrück travel destination encompasses large areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left-bank section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The landscape also includes large parts of the Hunsrück plateau and the quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary. This regional perspective complements the choice of specific routes in Gondershausen without equating the district’s destinations with the local routes.

The Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig runs across the HunsrĂĽck via Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard. The long-distance hiking trail covers 410 kilometers in 27 stages. Cyclists will find extensive, well-developed and signposted routes in the Rhein-HunsrĂĽck district, along the Rhine and through the HunsrĂĽck. During the 2026 season, the RadBus HunsrĂĽck-Mosel, route 629, supports cycling tours on the Schinderhannes Cycle Route between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen, as well as on the Schinderhannes-Untermosel Cycle Route between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. Check the timetable for your travel date before setting out.

Another hiking option in the wider Rhein-Hunsrück travel destination is the Geierlay: the suspension bridge lies between Mörsdorf and Sosberg, is 360 meters long, and stands 100 meters high. Circular trails around the bridge range from 3 to 14 kilometers and start and end at the visitor center in Mörsdorf. The Geierlay Dream Loop is 6.6 kilometers long and rated moderate. Check the current route before setting out on a specific hike.

Culture across the wider destination

For a different focus, the House of Regional History in Kastellaun traces the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War through themed exhibitions, information panels, and original documents. The following opening hours apply from April 25, 2026: Thursdays and Fridays from 12:00 to 17:00, and Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 11:00 to 17:00. Check visiting hours before your trip.
