Frankweiler brings together an archaeological forest trail, historic sights and hiking trails through the Vorderhunsrück. The “Exploring the Frankweiler Forest” trail reveals the history of this woodland; the Lippertsweg passes through several districts and varied landscapes. When planning your stay, it is worth first deciding which hiking and cultural theme you would like to focus on.

Archaeology on the “Exploring the Frankweiler Forest” trail

The archaeological circular trail is about 3.5 km long. It follows paved paths through a continuous woodland area and has only a few metres of elevation gain. Information boards explain the significance and use of this woodland and show that it was already important in Celtic and Roman times. The circular trail takes you through 3,000 years of history. Roman funerary gardens and a prehistoric group of burial mounds offer an insight into the lives and funerary customs of earlier eras. Geocaching points are also set up along the trail.

The circular trail can be reached via the entrance by the Frankweiler sports ground, continuing to the car park by the wind turbine, and via the car park at the Braunshorn sports ground. Before setting out, check local notices about trail conditions. From the village square in Frankweiler, a signposted access path also leads to the “Traumschleife Baybachtal”.

The Lippertsweg through the VorderhunsrĂĽck

Officially opened on 16 September 2018, the Lippertsweg connects Beltheim, Mannebach, Heyweiler, Frankweiler, Sevenich and Schnellbach along old paths. It is about 26 km long in total. Fields, forests and stream valleys alternate along the route—landscapes typical of the Vorderhunsrück. A signposted cross-connection between Beltheim and Frankweiler makes it possible to divide the route into two shorter day hikes of about 15 km each.

Two different hiking profiles

Compared with “Exploring the Frankweiler Forest”, the Lippertsweg offers a different kind of hike: the archaeological circular trail focuses on a continuous woodland area and its history, while the Lippertsweg connects several districts and landscape features. When planning your hikes, you can choose between the approximately 3.5 km loop, the full route of about 26 km and the two day hikes of about 15 km each. This makes it easy to tailor your planned outing to your interests and preferred distance.

Church and architectural history

Another point of cultural and historical interest is the Catholic church in Frankweiler. It was built in 1756. Its main structure is designed in the Baroque-Classical style; the interior features late Baroque forms. The year of construction and the stylistic features describe different aspects of the church: the year indicates when it was built, while the style terms characterise the main structure and interior. The church thus adds another architectural-historical perspective on Frankweiler to the prehistoric burial mounds and Roman funerary gardens.

When looking for a holiday apartment, your plans for outings can provide a useful starting point: the archaeological loop brings together forest and cultural history, while the Lippertsweg offers a longer hike or the option of dividing it into two day hikes. The signposted connection to the “Traumschleife Baybachtal” also provides another specific route to consider when planning your stay.
