Dommershausen stretches along a ridge between the valleys of the Baybach and LĂĽtzbach rivers. Hiking, cycling and local history offer different focal points for planning a trip.

Hiking and Cycling

The Baybachklamm Dream Loop is a 10.46-kilometre circular hike with 413 metres of ascent and descent. It crosses a gorge cut deep into HunsrĂĽck slate; some sections are secured with ropes. The distance and elevation gain provide measurable figures for your own planning, while the rope sections also shape the character of the trail. Since route details can change and conditions vary seasonally, check the information again before setting out.

Near Heyweiler, the route offers a view of Waldeck Castle in good visibility; shortly before the end of the hike, a high vantage point lies on the Barreterlay rock ledge. The HunsrĂĽck-Mosel Cycle Route passes through Sabershausen, a district of the municipality of Dommershausen, offering a cycling focus alongside the hiking options.

At 410 kilometres and 27 stages, the Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig is a long-distance route on a different scale. It runs from the Moselle through the Saarland and HunsrĂĽck to the Rhine. The HunsrĂĽck-Mittelrhein area also has a dense network of certified premium trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels. The Ehrbach and Baybach valleys can also be explored on foot in the direction of the Moselle.

Churches, Archives and Local History

The church in Dommershausen was built in 1759 and is considered a historic landmark of the village. The Pies Museum and Archive preserves regional and family documents, deeds, maps and photographs; these materials are presented in rotating public exhibitions. Since 1992, the VorderhunsrĂĽck Museum/Pies Archive and a library for personal and local history have been housed in a historic rectory dating from 1837/38.

The chapel in Dorweiler is a Gothic hall church dedicated to Saint Willibrord and first mentioned in writing in 1569. St. Vitus Chapel stands in Eveshausen and was built in 1763. The historical details emphasize different aspects: in Dorweiler, the architectural style, dedication and first written mention are central, while the construction years of 1759 and 1763 are the main focus for the church in Dommershausen and St. Vitus Chapel, respectively.

The Wider Rhein-HunsrĂĽck Region

In the Rhein-Hunsrück district, the landscape encompasses extensive areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left-bank section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein collective municipality and the town of Boppard in the Rhein-Hunsrück district belong to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. The House of Regional History in Kastellaun presents the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War through themed exhibitions, text panels and original documents. The district also includes extensive areas of the Hunsrück plateau and quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald; in the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rhine forms its eastern boundary.
