Roman history, Thonet tradition, views of the Rhine and hiking trails come together in Boppard. It is therefore worth deciding what to focus on when planning your trip: would you like to set aside more time for culture, excursions or the wine-growing landscape? Boppard brings these themes together with different facets of nature and city life—from hills and valleys to quiet lanes and lively squares.

Culture from Roman times to Thonet

A permanent exhibition about the Romans is located on Karmeliterstraße. Boppard’s cultural and historical sights also include the Electoral Trier Castle, St. Severus Church, the Carmelite Monastery, the Thonet Museum and the Roman fort. Historic villas, the old town’s lanes and the Rhine promenade offer more ways to explore the town.

Michael Thonet provides another specific point of interest: he opened his first workshop in Boppard in 1819. The Roman exhibition and Thonet’s story therefore represent different historical themes. If you would like to combine both with other buildings and a stroll through the lanes, you can make culture a focus of your trip rather than fitting it in between other activities.

Views of the Rhine and the landscape

The landscape can also be considered in different parts: Most of Boppard east of the A61 lies within the Middle Rhine Landscape Conservation Area and the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. The smaller part west of the A61 lies within the Moselle Landscape Conservation Area. For a view of the Rhine, the Boppard chairlift runs from Mühltal up to Gedeonseck, covering almost 240 metres in elevation. From Gedeonseck, you can see the Rhine’s largest loop; at the nearby Vierseenblick viewpoint, the river appears between green hills like a chain of lakes.

Hiking trails for different interests

Four long-distance hiking trails pass through Boppard: the RheinBurgenWeg, Rheinhöhenweg, Moselhöhenweg and Hunsrückhöhenweg. Seven other circular trails, ranging from eight to 13 kilometres in length, also pass through the town’s ten districts. If you are looking for a route with a specified distance, you can use this range as a basis for planning; the long-distance trails offer a different guide for longer walks.

The routes also differ in character. The Ehrbachklammweg connects the Rhine and Moselle. The Mittelrhein Klettersteig offers a hiking experience with an alpine feel. The HunsrĂĽckbahnweg, meanwhile, combines a hike with a journey on the steepest railway line in western Germany. A closure in the Buchholz area is listed for this trail, dated 29 July 2026; check the current status before setting out.

Wine country at the Bopparder Hamm

The Bopparder Hamm covers around 75 hectares and is the largest continuous wine-growing area on the Middle Rhine. Riesling is the defining grape variety there; it develops its distinctive character in the deep, slate-rich weathered soil. Wine taverns, winery events and private tastings at wineries are among the offerings around the Bopparder Hamm.

The Bopparder Hamm Wine Trail offers another way to experience the wine-growing landscape: the paved circular route is approximately 11.3 kilometres long and starts and ends near Peternach, about 1.5 kilometres outside Boppard. Along the way, panoramic views open up over the Rhine, Osterspai, Filsen and Boppard. Rest areas and benches provide opportunities for breaks; visits to Boppard’s wine taverns can be combined with the route. You can treat the route as a day hike in its own right or include wine and exercise in your trip plans.

Getting here and finding a hotel

Boppard can be reached by regional express trains via Koblenz, Mainz and Frankfurt. A ferry connects the town with the opposite bank of the Rhine; there are also scheduled long-distance boat services, including routes from Mainz and Cologne. If you are planning to take the ferry or a boat, check the schedules in advance.

When looking for a hotel in Boppard, start with your travel interests: culture and historic buildings, hiking trails or the Bopparder Hamm each offer a different focus. Decide which of these matter to you and plan your time for walks, sightseeing and breaks accordingly.
