The Beltheim district is part of the VorderhunsrĂĽck. Forests, open fields and streams shape a varied landscape that is becoming increasingly popular with hikers, sports enthusiasts and walkers. Anyone planning a stay focused on scenery and outdoor activity will find a practical starting point here for planning their trip.

Landscape, Trails and Helljaheisje

Near the village stands the Helljaheisje Chapel, a small building made of slate rubble stone. It is situated where the Uhler Weg meets a field path and offers a place to rest or stop after a hike or walk. In summer, there are two wooden benches outside. This makes it easy to include a visit to the chapel as a short break along the way, without having to make it a longer stay.

A clearly defined hiking stage is the 21st section of the Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig. It runs from Kastellaun via Mannebach to the SchmausemĂĽhle and is 17.7 kilometres long. Along the way, open landscapes alternate with the deeply incised gorges of the Frankweiler Bach and Baybach streams. This stage is on a different scale from a walk with a rest at the chapel: it describes a longer route featuring several named landscape features.

Rhein-HunsrĂĽck: Landscapes and Excursion Options

Large areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, and the left-bank section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley lie within the Rhein-Hunsrück district. The district also includes large parts of the Hunsrück plateau and the quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary. Parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein collective municipality and the town of Boppard belong to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was recognized in 2002.

The district offers numerous hiking trails, including the certified Soonwaldsteig. The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig also crosses the Hunsrück, passing through Kastellaun and continuing to the Rhine at Boppard; the full route covers 410 kilometres in 27 stages. An individual stage can be compared with the trails around the Geierlay Bridge, where several circular routes range from 3 to 14 kilometres. The Geierlay dream loop is 6.6 kilometres long and rated moderate. The bridge itself is 360 metres long and 100 metres high, and is located between Mörsdorf and Sosberg.

There is also a regional option for cycling: cycle paths run along the Rhine and through the HunsrĂĽck. The RadBus HunsrĂĽck-Mosel supports cycling trips on the Schinderhannes cycle route between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen, as well as on the Schinderhannes-Untermosel cycle route between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. Information about route 629 refers to the 2026 season; check the current timetable before travelling.

Culture and Regional Cuisine

The Museum Haus der regionalen Geschichte in Kastellaun presents the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War. Themed exhibitions, information panels and original documents guide visitors through the different periods. From 25 April 2026, the museum is open Thursdays and Fridays from 12 pm to 5 pm, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11 am to 5 pm. Check the opening hours before your visit. In Boppard, the Electoral Castle stands directly on the banks of the Rhine as a medieval fortification.

For a culinary introduction to the Rhein-HunsrĂĽck district, regional specialities and Middle Rhine wine from high-quality vineyards are highlighted. Alongside hiking and cycling, regional cuisine and culture therefore offer different themes to choose from when planning a trip.
