Waldbreitbach can be explored through a range of attractions: the tower of the parish church, a historic oil mill, nativity scene culture and paths through forests, meadows and fields. The attractions offer different experiences; some are tied to a particular season.

Church, oil mill and chapel

The Catholic parish church of the Assumption of Mary was founded by the Teutonic Order in the 13th century. Only the tower from that period remains. On the upper floor, Ionic columns divide the double arcades; since 1983, the tower has been designated a protected cultural monument. This particular architectural feature offers a way to appreciate both the long history of the church site and a distinctive architectural detail.

The oil mill on the Wied received its first licence in 1676. Its oak wooden drive mechanism for the edge runner mill dates from the rebuilding of 1700. It is the oldest surviving oil mill of this type in the Rhineland. The dates mark different chapters in its history: the first licence was followed by rebuilding, and the machinery from that time has survived to this day. Visitors can also see how the mill works at a restored oil mill in Waldbreitbach.

Another historic landmark is the Kreuzkapelle (Chapel of the Cross) on the banks of the Wied, at the edge of the village towards Hausen. Pastor Frederici had it built in 1694. The chapel is used for church services. The local architectural history thus ranges from the medieval church tower to milling technology and a place of worship dating from the late 17th century.

Nativity scenes as a seasonal highlight

The large natural-root nativity scene in the parish church of the Assumption of Mary has been set up since 1989. In 1998, it was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s largest natural-root nativity scene. The tradition extends beyond this individual display: for more than 30 years, Waldbreitbach has been transformed into a Christmas village, with Christmas attractions and numerous nativity scenes throughout the village. Nativity scene culture thus connects a distinctive setting inside the church with seasonal decorations across the entire village. The specific dates vary from year to year; check the event dates if you want your stay to coincide with this period.

Another stop for nativity scene enthusiasts is the nativity scene museum on the Kleine Wäller Wied-Runde. It displays 2,500 nativity scenes from around the world. If you are planning a visit, check the opening hours for your travel dates.

Trails and outdoor activities

The Wäller Tour W3 follows varied paths through forests, meadows and fields south and west of Waldbreitbach. A Kneipp basin lies directly on the route and is fed by an iron-rich mountain spring from a former ore mine tunnel. There is a free parking area for the W3 on Marktstraße, with public toilets. Information about facilities and trails can change, so check before setting out; temporary diversions are also possible.

The Kleine Wäller Wied-Runde offers a different range of themes. The craft museum on the route is housed in a half-timbered building more than 300 years old, and the nativity scene museum is also on this trail. Rowing boats and pedal boats are available at a boat rental along the route. This allows you to combine different interests when planning your visit: historic crafts and nativity scene culture on the one hand, and a boat ride on the other. Check the current availability of boats in advance.

A pilgrimage trail in the Wied Valley begins at St. Marienhaus on Klosterberg, home of the Waldbreitbach Franciscan Sisters. In summer, the Klosterberg terraces and the herb and Bible garden also invite visitors to take a break or join a guided tour. Check in advance what is available to visitors on your chosen date. This lets you take seasonal activities into account when planning without assuming they are available year-round.
